...it's quite possible.

I had forgotten he was on West's staff. Ole Miss had some pretty solid OL's with him as well, and that's saying something knowing how much Eli gets sacked.

Former Auburn OL Coach, JB Grimes, and former SC OL Coach, Eric Wolford, have thrown their hats in the ring.

I heard the rumors about Eric last night at dinner ... and man, I like Eric a lot as a person, can't blame him for taking the YSU job when he did, but I just don't know about bringing him back.

Eric thinks a lot of himself. Eric always reminded me a lot of Rick Minter ... FWIW. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I've said it before - he's really really Midwestern, he does not have a smidgen of Southern in him and Mindy was not crazy about living down here the last time. She was very nice, very accommodating but they just didn't fit well down here - God Bless'em.

I get it though .... he's looking for the big paycheck again and hoping to command $600k a year - I get it. But we need someone who really loves this place and wants to be here this time BUT who can also coach his arse off.

It's not too much to ask for both.

Mike Summers has been in coaching since the 80s and his resume shows that he has been specifically involved with OL coaching for over 15 years.

He was also at Florida in 2014 for Muschamp's last year and when Roper was there so I'd think Summers is the preferred choice.

His past jobs from the UF site:

COACHING EXPERIENCE
2014-Present Florida Offensive Line
2013 USC Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line
2010-12 Kentucky Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line
2008-09 Arkansas Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line
2007 Atlanta Falcons Offensive Line
2003-06 Louisville Offensive Line
2001-02 Ohio Offensive Line
2000 Oklahoma State Tight Ends/Recruiting Coordinator 1996-99 University of the South Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator
1992-95 Oregon State Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator
1991 Oregon State Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator
1985-90 Northern Illinois Offensive Coordinator
1982-84 Texas A&M Offensive Line Graduate Assistant
1980-81 Kentucky Offensive Line Graduate Assistant

Any word on Summers getting the job. Seems like Muschamp is getting the band back together.

Summers is a great technician.

I'd just never heard of him. Also you'll notice there are no titles on that resume of his.

If he's good, well great then. Honestly anyone would be a damn sight better than Elliot anyway.

So there was a thread started on another site by an insider with the first post of "Lets say Eric Wolford got the OL coach job. What would you think?"

Didn't say that he did or didn't, but with how hush hush Boom likes to keep things maybe this is their way of saying without saying.

It's starting to look more and more like Eric - if they get together on the money.

I dunno though. I did know Eric, have not really had any contact with him since he left for YSU ...

... so to answer that question. Let's try to respond to that question.

Let's start with the basic question and that is: What are Eric's bonefides?

preciate the info Rooster

when I first heard EW's name a few weeks ago I got bad Jon Hoke vibes all over again. no disrespect to Wolford as a person or his family as I'm sure they're fine people. I suspect this is about the $$$ more than anything else for him.

he was here at Carolina for barely a calendar year (Jan 9 - Dec 15, 2009) so the nostalgic notions of returning to USC seem a reach at best. he wants to get paid and has every right to negotiate with USC. Carolina also has every right to hire someone else.

his original HC contract was for $200K/yr and he received a 2-yr extension pre-2014 season at $215K/yr. he also had a $50K/yr tv/radio deal as HC. he did not 'return' as coach in 2015. the 49ers/NFL do not make public their assistants salaries, but there's no way he made more than his HC salary as an assistant OL coach with SF.

Muschamp will hopefully do better for the current needs at USC with this hire.

More signs pointing towards Wolford.

Here's an interview from last year.

Might sound odd, but the phrase that most caught my attention and made me think "Muschamp coaching staff material" was that EW stressed the "blue-collar work ethic" that Boom also stresses.

I swear..that interview sounded as if EW was already suspecting that the OL job here might be opening up and he was kinda-sorta hinting that he'd like another shot at it if that did come to pass.

Obviously Muschamp believes he is a good enough recruiter. Just hope he stays longer than a year this go round.

From what I understand that was part of the conversation. Long term commitment. Buy a house, settle in. May be a multiyear (3) contract but I'll be shocked if we bit on that with an OLine coach. I know he got less than the $600k he was asking for but still, if he is committed and willing to assimilate and willing to adapt to the South this time around ... he can coach OLinemen and he can recruit. Eric has a very distinguished way about him. I think I mentioned it earlier but Eric always reminded me of Rick Minter.

Edited: "Let me" term to "Long" term ... and I hate autocorrect.

They could give him a title such as Run Game Coordinator like Elliott had, which would then allow for a multi-year contract (I think position coaches only get one-year contracts, while coordinators can get more than one) with a salary from $500K to $750K. The position coaches this past season already were earning $200K to upwards of $500K.

Elliott earned a salary of $500K this past season, while Lance Thompson like Elliott earned $500K last season and is under contract through the 2017 season. Thompson has the dual title of DL coach and Associate Head Coach for Defense - a move similar to how Spurrier had Ward as his DC and Ellis Johnson his Assoc. HC in chrg. of Defense in order to give both Johnson and Ward multi-year contracts (it was how we got Ward away from Arkansas).

Wolford reportedly earned around $200K as the HC at Youngstown St., so it shouldn't be much trouble to give him a better salary to be USC's OL coach....

$500k plus $35k in performance incentives and a two year deal.

Unprecedented for us with OLine coaches ... plus he's been given a mandate to recruit some big boys from the Midwest.

Our best OLines in history have always been loaded with big Midwestern boys.
