The only time we’ve beaten a #1
It’s hands down the best

Didn’t we beat UNC one year they were #2?
(That was the highest upset we had before Bama)

This list is way too 2000s heavy

1981 game is a pretty big upset
Unc lost two games that year
To us and national champion Clemson
They finished 10-2 and 8th in the country

Our 81 team went 6-6

For me personally, this would be in my top 5. I was a freshman that year, our first year in the SEC and it cost Johnny Majors his job. I still remember Hank Campbell hitting their TE on the 2-pt conversion attempt to seal the victory, and the student section (in the other end zone at that time) erupted with a blizzard of cups in the air.

Those are all good ones that I remember well.

1957 win over Texas was huge back in the day. They were Top 10 and undefeated when we beat them 27-21 .... and they claimed they were overlooking us towards Oklahoma the next week, which they also lost. They had opened the season with a big win over Georgia in Atlanta and then Tulane (SEC) in Austin to begin the season and proclaimed their dominance over the South. They ended up losing to Ole Miss in their final game that year .... but we upheld the South's (ACC's) honor with our win.

If you're ever in the Richland County library downtown Columbia pull the microfiche for the old Columbia Record and The State the Sunday after that game to get a feel for how big that win was. Pull 6 October 1957.

I always remembered it to be James "Little Man" Stewart that Hank hit on that two point conversion attempt. I think Heath Shuler was the QB.

What got Johnny fired was him losing to Arkansas, Alabama AND THEN us ... three in a row. Then Fulmer took over and won the next four against winkin, blinkin, and knod .... Memphis, Kentucky and Vsnderbilt and then he won their bowl game against BC if I remember correctly. They started the season on a big roll beating everybody but then Majors had the heart attack. I think they finished #12 in the country that year but they had a loaded team that underachieved.

It was both Arkansas' and ours first year in the league and we both beat them. Alabama was their only other loss and Bama went on to win the National Championship over Miami.

Never been more surprised to win a game than 2000 UGA. Just snapped a 21 game losing streak and the Dawgs come in with national championship dreams and a Top 10 ranking. The defense was as hot as Columbia was that day and the goalposts came down for the second straight week.

Upset related

But what actually is the best team we beat?

I’m saying who ended up highest ranked

It’s gotta be that UGA team that won the sugar bowl right?

CockHoliday .... it was driving me nuts thinking I remembered that wrong so I found this.

#33 was Little Man Stewart. I forgot about Norman Green being in on the stop too but Campbell already had him wrapped up. He was a walkon too.

Are you referencing the 2007 UGA team or the 2001 UGA team IBG? Because we beat both of them I think .... and both of those UGA teams won the Sugar Bowl and finished #4 in the country. Wait, maybe that was actually the 2002 UGA team that beat FSU in the Sugar Bowl in 2003 and the 07 team beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl?

That 2002 game against UGA was the one where David Pollack stripped the ball away from Corey Jenkins in the endzone to win the game for them and I think Andrew Pinnock fumbled a pitch from Petty maybe, at the goalline, that would have won it for us with time running out.

Someone may remember that game, the specific year, better than I.

While the 1984 "upset" win over UGA is listed, I feel the bigger game from that year was vs #11 FSU. That game had the same feel of the 2012 UGA game. Electric.

07 UGA what I was talking about

Beat Hawaii in the sugar bowl
Actually finished the season ranked 3 in the coaches poll and 2 in the AP

Tennessee won the East that year

In 01 the UGA team beat went 8-4.
That Pollack play was wild though.
What’s crazier is seeing him now.
Quite thin. Looks good

10 - 2016 UR USC v #18 Tennessee (UTK finiahed 9-4 #22 AP)

9 - 1992 UR USC v #15 Mississippi St (MSU finished 7-5 #23 AP)

8 - 1992 UR USC v #16 Tennessee (UTK finished 9-3 #12 AP)

7 - 2005 UR USC v #12 Florida (UF finished 9-3 #12 AP)

6 - 2013 #20 USC at #5 Missouri (MO finished 12-2 #5 AP)

5 - 2000 UR USC v #9 Georgia (UGA finished 8-4 #20 AP)

4 - 2010 #19 USC v #1 Alabama (Ala finished 10-3 #9 AP)

3 - 1958 UR USC v #10 Pickens (Gamecocks won 26-6 in the penultimate Big Thursday and ruined a-hole Howard's season)

2 - 1980 UR USC at #17 Michigan (finished 10-2 Rose Bowl champs #4 AP)

1 - 1981 UR USC at #3 North Carolina (finished 10-2 #9 AP)

the '81 Gamecocks finished 6-6 with a loss at home to the University of Pacific two weekends after beating #2 UNCar on the road.

2012 Georgia game was not an upset regardless of the line. the 2010 Alabama game was between two highly talented teams that sent a lot of players to the NFL. it was the biggest win in Carolina football history but not the biggest upset.

For me? 1984 FSU, 2010 Bama, and 2012 UGA.....then we lost the next game after each of those.
