a thread over on TBS got me thinking, when all is said and done how will you feel about Jake? Here is my response to that thread.

quote:

Ive been very critical of Jake on this board, but its due to having high expectations of him. He came in with a ton of hype, and delivered against UT his freshman year. He was outstanding that year and good to very good his sophomore year. Junior year, we can all agree he wasnt even close to what we hoped and to that fact id even go and say he was garbage last year. He had a very good OL and a healthy Deebo and rest of the receiving corps.

If Jake ever had a solid ground game to help him sell a play action pass he would be deadly, i think Jake is that guy where he needs a good ground game to open up the middle of the field to really showcase his skillset. He is very cerebral and overthinks a ton and when nothing is open he relies on his arm too much and forces it instead of taking the free few yards or just tossing it away. Thats where most of his interceptions come from, in my opinion. Jake with a ground game and our stable of TEs this year should show that, IF our running backs stay healthy and the OL can get a push.

Overall, i think Jake is a top 10 qb all time at USC with the chance to get to top 5 if he can get that signature win, he will have all the records but without that win he will be very meh. That is not fault of his own as his teams so far have been out manned and out gunned to this point in his career, and will be this year as well. Fair or not, he has to get that big win to solidify himself as the GOAT USC QB1, if he does he will be the GOAT, if not he will always be the one who was good but couldnt win the big one.

All in all i dont disagree with HM, JW, and JC that Jake is and can go down as the best ever here, but he has to prove it on the field as a field general to me. Until then he will always be a very good qb who couldnt win the big one much like a bigger Doug Flutie

Its kinda redundant to even ask that question when he hasn't even finished his career here.

TBD
Let’s wait and see how his last year goes

He will “break all the records” but that’s because the game has changed and he played all 4 years.

Realistically if you’re a good QB you’re only staying 3 years

Outside of his qb abilities (or disabilities depending on which Jake shows up) I'll remember that he should still be in high school and he has a huge noggin.

One place Jake has not improved is handling adversity. His wr gets drop crazy and he loses composure. His last season he really needs to forget every play after it happens and stay patient.

I predict a much improved running game will make Jake look much improved this year.

I honestly wasn't trying to start anything but you stated " when all is said and done" and its impossible to answer that .

I did respond with another post on how I felt up to date.

Your breakdown was pretty spot on by the way.

i took no offense just replying, and i do agree i could have worded the subject line better

edit: also want to add to the OP that Jake has been snakebit a ton by drops that end up as INTs in his career

Whatever his career stats, W-L record is, how he played in certain big moments what I’m worried will be forgotten is that he was a much needed stop gap to stop the bleeding in the post Spurrier/ post Shaw era.

he did keep us afloat but after we are gone that fact will be lost, until he wins the big game, his name wont be passed down across generations like Connor or Stephen....Jake just IMHO isnt mentally tough enough to win the big one.

I don’t think that’s just the case.
The teams he played on just weren’t as good.
Don’t remember what year exactly but one of Shaw’s team was playing with 3 First round draft picks (Clowney Ingram Gilmore)
And 3 other players who are starters in the NFL (Cann, DJ and Alshon)
Along with players who were some kind of all conference recognition (Ace, Bruce, Taylor, Quarles and Holloman)
And Lattimore for a few games

The only player I can think of who’s close to the level of any of these players that Jake has played with is Deebo

Jake was the beginning trend of booing our own players. I hate this and unfortunately think it will become an accepted behavior by our fan base.

Politically correct answer: great kid and record holder for many statistics.

Politically incorrect answer: likely 0-4 versus Clemson.

I agree with Jake's mental issue being weak. If things don't go his way he panics and starts forcing throws and/or starts rushing his reads.

Booing coaches for play calls? yes. Singling out a player? no

IIRC correctly Beecher was not wel received deep into the NC State game nor was Shaw in his first game vs ECU.

I can't speak for anything Pre like 1996 but as far as I remember if the team played bad, fans booed.

It happens in all sports.

And I'm not against it in SEC football.

If they can't take the fans getting on their case being booed, can they take a 6-7 Dlineman coming at them?

sure they are "student athletes" but this is SEC football.
Our football team is a multi million dollar business and we want the best results.
