McGuire's best start was 7-0 in 1970-71. surprisingly, the 1969-70 #1 ranked Gamecocks that finished 24-3 dropped their second game of the season by 1 to Auburn before reeling off 16 in a row.

Prohibition was repealed in spring 1933 so it would have been legal.

I remember that game like yesterday ... told a story about being at that game not long ago on the SECr.

We went into the season thinking we were the best team in the country, but after that game we thought we would be lucky to win 15 games.

What a season that was.

I'd wager that you and 12400 other Gamecocks were in full voice that night inside the Coliseum.

34 seasons in the The Frank. Carolina Coliseum was Dixie's crown jewel of basketball venues at the time it opened. it was a pretty cool arena up until it was retired too.

Now that is a college basketball arena. Large, but not oversized, and the fans are right on top.

Some good childhood memories there.

Of all the time I've spent in the Coliseum, I've never seen it configured as a basketball arena.

I've gone through undergrad there, had a beer on the roof, in an office, and spent the night in it on more than one occasion. But I've never seen a basketball game there.

I remember the first time I actually went to a game there was really to see BJ McKie play. I saw him play a bunch in at his HS.

I went to Eddie Fogler's basketball camp and got a chance to play on the court and I have vague memories of walking over that bridge that goes to the Blatt.

It was a year or so after McKie had left but he did come by at some point. I also got to meet my favorite player, Antonio Grant, the one who hit a couple of big game winners.

I understand the want for a city the size of Columbia to want an arena that is better designed for multiple events with luxury seating, but the Coliseum is by far a better college basketball venue.

You and I must have been at the same camp. I went three straight summers back from like 1997-1999, and I actually have a picture with Antonio Grant, as well. I remember playing over at the Blatt, playing in the coliseum, and eating meals at Bates West. Good times. On the last day of camp, my parents came to pick me up, and I was talking to John Ribok. My dad got a bigger kick out of that than I did.

Didn't we practice in the building next to the Coliseum? Which I think is now used for the volleyball team?

I prefer BB venues with no boxes, atmosphere is better.

Poor Winthrop.Imagine playing at CLA when you're used to their arena.

They have a beautiful campus at Winthrop, though.

Just searching for something positive to say about Winthrop.

Opponent was one you expect to see in November, not December, but with holidays approaching may have been what fit in.
