They won on a field goal against Syracuse as time ran out.
Tennessee only got to kick that winning fg after a bull shite 4th down PI call on Syracuse to keep UT's drive alive.
Syracuse should have had the ball on the turn over on downs and been able to run out the clock to win.

They even interviewed Tresell in the third quarter because Ohio State has a chance to jump in if State won.
A&M played four top 5 ranked teams that year, including FSU, and Ohio State was the toughest opponent. UT lucked out not having to play them.

Watched the second half... how on earth was that Tennessee team undefeated?
Tennessee was up 23-9 with 6 minutes left in this game. Peerless Price had 199 receiving yards in this game. Florida State had just over 250 yards total offense. Overall...Defense was how that Tennessee team was undefeated.

Defense yes but what is often overlooked about that team is that it was good to great at everything. There was no weak point to exploit. Offense wasn't great but it was good. Special teams were great and defense was great.
That team's attitude was also completely different. Despite being a team filled with plenty of star power, they were the most blue collar team I've ever watched. They simply went to work and kept working all 4 quarters. They would grind people down not with splash offense (although that team was more than capable of it) but by playing every single minute.
Also two words explain everything anyone needs to know about that team: Al Wilson.

and other times it was a massive struggle to beat bad teams (Auburn and LSU in '99)
Luckily for State there wasn't replay in 99. If so, State loses that game to LSU.

It also helped Tennessee's defense that they were facing Marcus Outzen instead of Chris Weinke.
