This can turn out to be bad PR for Mizzou and coach Drink if true.

Doesn’t really matter if it’s true or not (I’m sure it is)It’s out there.

I could think I’ve several guys I’d rather cut than Watkins though. Curious decision

Likely we'll never know the real story. But if Luper really told the kid, "you're still on scholarship, that's not being taken away from you"...and then said the reason is they're losing scholarships and running low, well...??

Edited: On second thought, I guess the kid could remain on scholarship if he's not officially on the team, so it wouldn't count against the limit. I dunno.

Correct.

I guess I don't understand where the drama is coming from with this. If I had to guess, I would think this is how 90% of "processing" is done. Coaches don't tell them they have to leave, they just say they aren't needed on the team anymore.

What would a better way be?

Agreed. I’m not saying it’s nice or the optics are good, but you have a roster to manage with only so many spaces. There’s no easy way of creating space without telling someone they’ve been cut. Sucks, but that’s how sports work at high school level and above.

Yeah, it is what it is. You just don’t normally see it spoken about like this. Who knows though, it’s one side of the story. Possible Watkins was not doing what he was being asked to do

I believe this is the correct answer.

College FB is big biz and I hate it for the kid. I hope he lands somewhere and runs for 1500 yds a year.

cutting the fat

Have to trim the roster, kids who don't perform, they can go else where and open up spots.

I think this pretty well sums things up. It sucks but it is one of those things that happens. You have a new coaching staff that is dealing with a limited roster and they have to move some kids off the team.

I don't think it is so much that it reflects poorly on Drink and company so much as it reflects poorly on the current system we have for college football. You can't blame the coaches for this, it is a deeper problem.
