After 92 years it looks like the ole girl is finally being torn down. She may have been an eyesore, but the best eyesore in town.

quote:

Baseball greats Frank Robinson and Ted Kluszewski spent their early days playing for the Columbia Reds at Capital City Stadium. Over the years, visiting players and future stars who played on the field included Chipper Jones and Tom Glavine of the Atlanta Braves and Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees. Last month, Rivera became the first player ever unanimously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Long before he tallied his historic 755th home run, a young Hank Aaron stepped into Capital City Stadium as a second baseman for the Jacksonville Braves in his final minor league game.

A nice little then and now video below:

That place has been set to be demolished for years now. A few months ago, they said it was about to be demolished. I'll believe it when I see the wrecking ball.

Wal mart, at one time, was going to build there but didn't after the community cried out about another walmart. Loss of jobs and tax revenue for last few years due to complaints.

Anything major that is built there will have a negative effect on water flow in the area.

While true, there are other ways to get those jobs and revenue without replacing one eyesore with another eyesore that Wal Mart would have been.

And yet no other way was used. So that eyesore of a stadium remained without the jobs and tax revenue.

Until now.

I'm okay with letting a 92 year old stadium sit there while the city and the community decides to do what's best and not just give it up to the fastest bidder.

I saw a Tennessee fan get his arse beat there at the Hootie & the Blowfish and Edwin McCain free concert back in 2004 on the Friday night before our game. Good times lol.

I can remember going to games there in the 70s and 80s for sure .... not sure that I remember going to any in the 60s for some reason. I must have but I just can't remember it or any details of it.

I was at that concert too. Darius ended up at Bar None afterwards and two of my hammered friends played shuffle board with him and had no clue who he was.

Did he buy out the bar that night? That story sounds familiar.

I’m pretty sure he bought drinks for everyone. My buddies got a pic with him after they were told who he was. Hearing them tell the story still cracks me up.
