Not saying that didn't happen, but it's not the reason he left like the article states.

The article specifies other issues typical of Bielena were likely at play. Zach Smith didn't strike me as the trustworthy type, but this would be an odd and insignificant thing to lie about.

KJ Hill confirmed it on Twitter

KJ wouldn't have mattered here. Still would have sucked at that time.

Arkansas is backwoods state, they do some stuff like you read about Southern recruiting where all of a sudden, K.J.’s stepdad’s job is being threatened by the boss and his family is getting run out of town
In contrast to those cosmopolitan uptowners who give out tattoos as recruiting tools. frick that menace to society
Also, I'm so glad Bret is a "regular guy" who doesn't coachspeak. What a nice guy... I'd have a beer with the fat man!! Smh

The article doesn't do the story justice. The Bert stuff starts at about 38 min. mark. Smith comes off as a bit intense, but he's also extremely well spoken and tells a very clear story. His whole podcasts episode is actually not bad. He's revealing lots of behind the scenes stuff because he knows he never getting another coaching job.
It gives lots of insight into how urban brought "sec" recruiting and mentality to the Big 10.
Thats what sparked the Bert story because he said they basically "ran" Bert out of Wisconsin because of their new recruiting style. Apparently there was internal strife also at Wisconsin.
Smith may be a piece of shite, but his podcast was actually not bad.
Also exposing Bert doing typical Clueless Bert things.

I believe it was probably more internal strife and Bert just wanting to run his own show completely independently. If Urban Meyer & Co. "ran" him out of Wisconsin due to the SEC flavor they brought, he wouldn't have ran directly to the SEC itself to compete yearly against the greatest CFB coach to have ever picked up a whistle.
He was mostly just in over his head here.

I'm certain CCM can be successful as well, at a certain level.
This SEC is a whole 'nother animal though.
You have to recruit at a very high level just to be competitive.
Hope he is not over his head as well.

If I had to guess, I'd say either BB was joking or let his arrogance get the best of him.
Either way it gave KJ and his family the justification they were looking for to "get out" of his commitment. The phone call and the money were just too good to pass up.

I don't know about "joking" but I've heard things and this didn't happen the way it's being portrayed here either.
KJ was playing both sides against each other (surprise surprise) and telling BB he wanted to come to Arkansas and that OSU was just to get the visit and perks. BB reeeally believed he was all in from what I've heard.
OSU was portrayed as being a nuisance and pulling some dirty stuff to recruit KJ, and he acted like it really bothered him to Bielema's face (and the rest of our staff). Of course when he was around our recruiting staff and BB he wanted to act like he wanted no part of OSU, the kid was just a dishonest kid hoping to get everything he could out of the deal but also not "hurt anyone's feelings" here in Arkansas.
After so much of this BB took it upon himself to "handle OSU" believing that KJ and his family were in over their heads and didn't know what to do. Of course it never dawned on him that KJ may be playing both sides against eachother, afraid to come with the truth.
Now, this all comes from someone on the UofA side so I'm sure there's some bias there. Like most things, I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Either way it wasn't just BB calling out of the blue and trying to cancel the visit for no reason.

I'm basically entirely convinced he is. I feel like that degree of honesty can be more accepted here, rather than over on HV where the rampant idiocy won't even dare to entertain the idea that a HC who had a losing record at SMU and who gave us the worst season in Hog history could possibly end up a disappointment.
He deserves at least three years to prove himself, maybe even four if the third year was promising. But nothing about this guy screams anything but a waste of time.
Also, we finished last year's recruiting cycle at #23 on 24/7. We have seven commitments for 2020 - one 4*. He's just like every other coach we've had as far as recruiting goes. There's nothing wrong with admitting we've seen mostly negative and preparing ourselves to move on at an appropriate time.
Of course, I'd love to be wrong. I love the Hogs and it would be nice to just not have to do all this again. But we have to face reality.

As far as facing reality. We won't out recruit Alabama. At the very least we've taken a step in the direction of trying to run an offense that can potentially out scheme other teams. But I'm more optimistic than you are and think Chad can improve us a lot from where we had been, which is to say for a first step winning non-conference games and consistently beating ole miss, miss St and mizzou again. Once we get there we can start thinking bigger

I would probably assume, Bert called his friend and former assistant Chris Ash and jokingly said he was canceling the visit.
CUM probably told Ash he didn’t care if he was joking they were going to use it against Arkansas and say that Bert was serious.
Also, didn’t Smith lose all credibility when he was exposed as a wife beating piece of crap?
