Does Mendenhall call the D or the offense?

Gundy calls the offense, or has, at OSU, but I did not know of any Defense examples. Thanks for the Patterson mention. Good to know there is at least one successful example out there.

I know at BYU Mendenhall called the defense,
At Virginia he technically has a DC, but it’s still his defense. Similar to TCU.

Nick Saban, even though he had D Coordiators, did the defensive calls himself while at Michigan State, and in his first couple of years at LSU. He does not anymore; sticks to working with D backs in practice.

Yea I see BO taking a similar approach.
Naming Walters as the DC, but on game day BO is the actual play caller.
Then in a couple of years turn the play calling over to Walters, but continue coaching LBs.

Jim Leavitt might be a DC Odom might look at. He has a lot of experience recruiting in Florida and he is a Mizzou alum. He is the DC at Oregon right now

What about Shannon from Florida? He could recruit the Miami area like no other.

Jim Leavitt was the head coach at South Florida for 13 years and he has ties to California and NFL.

Mizzou probably can’t pay him enough to leave Oregon.
