Would it be a good idea to sit him for this one? If the LB corp wasn't such a MASH unit, I would say this is a no-brainer to sit him. You can tell he is dealing with that groin injury and just generally being pretty beat up and getting him close to 100% for Auburn would be fantastic. But can Alabama afford to sit him against Mercer. First does Alabama even have the numbers to sit a LB for this game? Second even if Alabama did have the numbers to sit him do they need to play the normal LB rotation to get them up to game speed working together?

I'd rest him and let some freshman play as many snaps as possible.

For example get Moses ready and his other backup. And time to burn the Mathis redshirt. Need everyone ready.

I think so. His body needs the rest and Moses and Holcombe need the snaps

If we have been getting Benton ready, now is the time.
Supposedly, Ben Davis was making a move, let's see if the light is on or not.

Personally I would line up with 4 lineman and 7 DBs the entire game. Some kinda modified prevent. But this is why I am not a coach.

You may not be wrong. I would bet Auburn will put us in Dime a lot and run an empty set. That's where the rabbits come in and tee off on Stidham.

Auburn would be doing us a favor putting us in dime.

Speaking of formation adjustments. For those with a deeper understanding of Auburn's offense than I have, are they the kind of offense we would normally play more nickel against or more base 3-4 defense? Follow up question, in Bama's standard nickel defense what LB positions usually remain on the field? Next follow up question with Alabama's current LB rotation (assuming Lewis, Miller, Wilson, SDH remain out) who are the LBs on the field when in nickel?

What's been the deal with Ben Davis? Head or heart?

Barn is a read option team depending on the number of WR's we are usually in nickel against them, sometimes Dime and rarely Base.

Our nickel package consists of, 1 NT, 2 DE 1 OLB (Sam) and 2 ILB ,3 DB including the nickel and 2 Safeties 1 strong 1 free.

Linebackers on the field are Evans, Holcombe at ILB and Mosely at Sam OLB

For reference Miller and Lewis play Sam

If Evans can make calls instead of Holcombe, is there a good nickel/dime 3-LB lineup we could use with Evans in the middle?

Great thanks for the response. So the good news is that there may only be 3 LBs out there majority of the game. Bad news is that SAM and MIKE are two of the LB positions in the nickel package and those are the two we are down to third string. Sounds like bottom line is Holcombe is likely to be out there a lot and will have to step up.

If Evans can make the calls he would bey go to in Dime but Holcombe is actually good at coverage.

Unless they rep Moses until he is about to die I don't see him jumping Holcombe however, they could just simplify it and let him be an athlete.

I wouldn't be against it. Holcombe and Moses need more in game snaps.

We don’t need Moses out there with his head swimming trying to decipher if he should follow the dive or the jet sweep.

Kid runs a 4.4 though, throw him out there on passing down and tell him to go knock Stidham’s head off. That’s one thing that gives me some hope about this game, if we get after him he can’t escape. He’s either going down or making an ill advised throw.

That's kind of where I'm at. We need to be all over Stidham. If he is allowed time we are screwed. It's literally the recipe to beating them. Blitz him until he is seeing ghosts.

Evans doesn’t see a snap and I want most of the defensive starters our by mid 2nd quarter. Holcombe, Moses and Cowan need to play the entire game if possible. They need snaps so they don’t look lost af again for IB
