Am I underselling this bunch just setting the expectation at a tournament appearance?
Depending on health/injuries, I think this club has more than enough to return to the S16 or more. The tournament draw is just so important, that it can be difficult to say how far a team should or could go in a vacuum. We have a great roster and a great staff so we should have confidence in making the tournament pretty comfortably.

I don’t really see us making a run lacking experience especially in terms of bigs.
Guard play is much more important come tournament time imo and we have a lot of experience in that department with JQ, Shack and Ellis. JD will have 30 games of experience by then as well and I still haven't mentioned Darius Miles who will have around 50 games of experience. Really sucks we've lost Nimari though. Holt will also have a chance to work his way into the rotation or play spot minutes, but I wouldn't expect him to overtake any of the other guys.

We’ll have to see who emerges out of Bediako, KAH and the Tchikou.
Everything we've heard so far seems to indicate that Bediako is the real deal. It sounds like Oats expects him to be really strong at rebounding, rim protection and putbacks from day one. KAH should be able to provide solid minutes in a reserve role. I'm hoping/expecting him to play a role somewhat similar to what Gary did last year in a hustle/effort niche spot, but he probably won't be quite as good defensively as Gary is/was. Tchikou is a wild card. The sky is the limit for him, but he's still not completely cleared from a major injury and may be lacking a bit maturity wise in the eyes of the coaches. He could easily be one of our best five or we could get next to nothing out of him - we just don't really know yet. Gurley and Gary (still including him as a "big") are both going to play a ton of minutes in front court type positions.

Starting 5:
JQ
Shack
Ellis
Gary
Gurley
I feel like that's the most likely.
One difference that I could also see is swapping JQ with JD if Oats/JQ feel like they want to keep him in that sixth man role that he really flourished in last season.

My guesses at the starting 5...
Beginning of season:
JD
Shack
Ellis
Gary
Gurley
End of season:
JD
Shack
Ellis
Gary
Tchikou
In both scenarios JQ is top 3 in minutes played.

Thanks for the breakdown Chad.
I was looking forward to using the nickname
Tch-Eiffel Tower, but I think his name is pronounced Tch-eee-kou instead of Tch-eye-kou. We could maybe call him FrenTchi if he earns a nickname.
That’s my expert analysis.

Probably more his AAU tapes. He played small classification Alabama basketball, which scouts probably don't bother watching much.

He should likely be a one and done. If he's not, then something has gone wrong.

As we saw with Primo, if a kid has the athleticism, arm length, etc.---they'll get drafted. NBA teams love players with high ceilings.

Neither have most of the players at the top of the draft boards. JD Davison has #1 overall potential due to his ridiculous athleticism and skill set. The biggest question with him is his competition, but he did great against higher competition as well.

You have no idea how good JD is do you? Your fixing to find out soon! He is still working on his shooting everyday which that is what will get him drafted higher if he is able to make shots but his passing ability is ridiculous!

20 under-the-radar breakout players for the 21-22 season
Keon Ellis, Alabama: Nate Oats has perimeter minutes available in his rotation following Nimari Brunett’s season-ending knee injury. Ellis will be sure to take advantage. The 6-6 wing had 10 points and nine rebounds in the Crimson Tide’s Sweet 16 loss to UCLA last spring and should emerge into a consistent offensive threat for Alabama.

Happy birthday to Coach Oats.

I think JQ was playing better than anyone to close out last season. I could be wrong but, I think he starts because of his experience and leadership.
