Special Teams - A
Mevis solid. Kickoffs touchbacks or good coverage. Punting was exceptional.
Defense - B
Made adjustments which I was really happy to see. Struggled against the run but overall I thought they gave the offense a chance to make this blow out. Liked the cornerback play. Evans is great. Alldredge picked it up throughout the game. Shawn Robinson continues to be a feel good story. Player that impressed me the most…Abrams Draine. Wow. What a switch.
Offense - C-
Oof. They did enough to win I guess. Play calling was an F. I hope they were trying to keep it vanilla and not show everything. That’s about the nicest thing I can say. I thought the players did alright but the play calling just didn’t set them up for success. Too many long developing, cute crap that ended up for a loss.

Drink gotta stash trick plays against inferior teams completely. Shouldn’t be needed at all. Focus on fundamentals. Offense looked better in a hurry up tempo than slower.
Badie was an A+ on O. He needs help at RB though.
I hope one of these WRs steps up to be the go to. We haven’t had one establish that yet.
I want Cooper to get up to game speed and playbook skills ASAFP. He could be a Tavon Austin type with his speed and size.
Evans is solid as hell.

Very happy to see the half-time adjustments. I love how cool, calm, and collective our QB is out there. Dude is ice cold.
I don't think we will ever see him throw the ball over his back like the LSU QB did last night. No panic.
The thicker kicker is legit.
Need to tighten up the screws on D and O -- hopefully we can make appropriate adjustments for UK and fix the issues. D was getting gashed in the first half.

Defense looked much better in the second half.
Baldredge had a real nose for the ball. Ends gave up the edge too much. Would’ve liked to see more from Nicholson.
Abrams-Draine was good.
Hea looked good with limited targets. Cooper had some flashes. Looked like he tweaked something in the first half. Chism was a reliable option.
Bazelak looked solid. Not sure he has the touch on the deep ball.

Aldridge will look good in the stats column, but when they ran at him, I didn't see him shed 1 block and RBs ran through untouched. That will stand out on film to KY.
You can tell Robinson is good at reading things. As a QB your main read is the safeties, so he's just doing things in reverse. He may start in 3 games.
Rountree, Cale and Bolton masked our recruiting deficiency at LB and RB. They more than outperformed their 2 star rating. But now it's hurting us.

I noticed the same thing. When he wasn't blitzing, he was a blocking dummy. Getting pushed 8-10 yards down field by O lineman and no gap control.

Good thing is KY is next. Maybe yesterday was an anomaly. But I guarantee they run at him to test him.

I was disappointed with the underwhelming play of both lines. Wilks had to send exotic blitzes to generate any kind of pass rush and I take Drinkwitz' refusal to run in short yardage and goal line situation as a vote of no-confidence in his offensive line.
Badie reminded me of Henry Josey with his north-south shiftiness and burst and as Athos mentioned the need for a second back to emerge is critical, hopefully in the hammer mold of Larry Rountree for short yardage.
The coverage skills of the DBs was outstanding as were the special teams. Nick Bolton is sorely missed.
For a one game cameo, this team feels very much like the last few Mizzou squads: strongly in need of defensive line havoc-wreakers and wide receivers who can gain seperation. Overall I'm not optimistic of going into Kentucky and coming out with a win.

The level of concern should be at the trenches. Period. It all starts there in the SEC.

I thought Wingo played well especially as a true freshman. The other guys are who they are. Recruiting is the key. Fact is, we went a while without good Recruiting. Drink will change that.

Those aren’t “trick plays”. They are a regular part of Drink’s offense.
They don’t seem to work very often though

That must be the plan to dummy the other team for the following week! :)

As funny as this is, I feel like Andy Reid does that kind of stuff. As much as they don't work it does make the opponent have to remember more things and sets up other things.

I'm concerned about the trenches too.
They inflicted heavy damage running the ball. If we were fortunate we were winning or tied through out. They got predictable in the 4th trying to pass, and that's where we got all those sacks.
If we fell behind, their ground game would have punished us.
If I were KY, I'd run against us 3 of 4 times.

Our LBs suck. That’s the biggest problem on defense

I don't know if I would be that hard on them. We have been blessed with undervalued LB recruits who have had extremely high football IQs.
We did get that 4 star kid from Indiana at LB and the Tennessee player of the year, and neither did anything LB. Maybe we should just develop a written exam for LB recruits.

And another thing. I've never watched Rice football, but maybe the way Wilkes was using Aldridge doesn't fit his playing style. Maybe he needs to be further away from the line to see things develop. That would make sense if he doesn't have the instincts of Cale Garrett or Bolton. Just my humble opinion.

Neither of them can get off blocks. They were getting washed on 90% of the running plays. They both played the entire game (another issue, apparently they are way better than their backups) and had 13 tackles. 4.5 of those were sacks.
CMU ran the ball 29 times and our backers get 8/9 tackles. That’s bad. Really bad.
Another thing here is we changed Manuel’s position. He was a playmaker when he was playing around the LOS on every snap.
I do think some scheme adjustment could help, but the LBs are what they are unfortunately
