I'll always remember this giant dude chasing down the Auburn WR.

TAMPA — Former Bucs first-round draft pick Keith McCants, whose six-year NFL career was followed by a downward spiral of self-infliction that included a dependence on painkillers and eventually street drugs, died Thursday in St. Petersburg.
The cause of death appears to be a drug overdose, though an investigation continues, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office indicated.
A twice-divorced dad of four, Mr. McCants was 53. Earlier this year, he successfully had undergone left hip-replacement surgery and spoke openly of using his backstory as a cautionary tale for youngsters.

I remember that too. We were undefeated, first trip to Auburn ever, and ran into a buzz saw.
He was the premier player on that team. That's the first year I followed Alabama football (the year I decided I'd be going to Bama). So I'll always remember those players. Gary Hollingsworth, etc.

I was a walk on QB during that 1989 season with him and he was just an amazing athlete! I recall prepping for Vanderbilt and their split back veer option one evening inside BDS. For some reason, Coach Curry would bus different groups over to the stadium at times to practice. We run inside veer to the left and I pull and decide to cut up into the hole. Keith clotheslines me, but grabs me before I hit the ground. The whistle blows and he sits me down and straightens my jersey and says “I’m gonna kill that MFer Saturday!” Low and behold, on the 2nd or 3rd snap, Keith knocks the QB out with a broken collarbone! The next afternoon in the team meeting room, I walk in and Keith just looks at me with this huge smile and says, “I told you!” Rest In Peace old friend!

Watch a game a while back with him. Helluva player. Dude was catching running backs from behind.

What a tragic and sad story. Keith will always be remembered and loved by the Alabama family. Prayers for his loved ones.

I DM'd him on Twitter one day and he actually DM'd me back. We chatted about a lot of different stuff. He was a very cool dude and very cordial

Love reading stories about that on our former players.

A very nice guy. I use to get my hair cut at the same barbershop as him. I asked him how to be a better tackler and hitter on defense because that was the side of the ball I played on. He told me don't hit with the bridge of your helmet but instead with your face mask and form tackle with your shoulder pads. I had fewer stingers and got my bell rung less.
