There’s Another Serious Problem With University Of South Carolina President Bob Caslen’s Commencement Debacle
It shouldn't be this hard for our university to avoid monthly embarrassment, but for some reason they just can't figure it out.
There's no defending this. I suppose most reasonable folks can excuse one PR blunder during a president's term, but there has been nothing but blunder-after-blunder since Caslen arrived. He's proven to be acutely underqualified and unprepared on multiple, very public occasions.
Of course, even if he were to leave, we all know the same political meddling would just take place again on his replacement, so what is the point in even hoping for some optimism for our university's future?

Did Tanner hire Caslen?
Just wondering...
Just wondering...

I'm pretty sure most of the people who supported the hire did so just to "trigger the Libs".

The stupidest thing about this slip-up is that even if he had said the correct word, it still would have been wrong.
He was going to say the University of Carolina. Wrong.
Instead he said the University of California. Even more wrong.

He has issued an apology for the plagiarism.
How embarrassing.
How embarrassing.

He won't, because none of you or anyone else will do what needs to be done. Its pretty simple actually. You show up in numbers to campus and not allow him into his office without a public spectacle. We find BOT member and make their lives such hell they want to leave the state. We organize student ticket turn ins, public cancelations of season ticket orders and walls outside of the stadium literally making a public hell for Tanner, this dip shite, Beamer and anyone else involved. We literally make a fricking list and make these peoples lives hell. Then we don't stop until we install leadership we actually fricking want.
I can stir this pot up just like I stirred the fire muschamp pot up on here. But it won't make a difference, because until we're on the news with a picture of all of these frick heads with red X's over them day in and out. NO changes will come.
I've spent a decade in my younger years tending bar. Anyone who has knows he was 1000% tipsy. You can see it clear as day.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Gamecock people are the majority of this state's voters. Our university has 10k more students than Clemson and we have similar in-state vs. out-of-state numbers. There has to be a political movement in this state for anything to change. Be it a Republican or a Democrat, do not support any political candidate in this state unless they support overhauling the BOT selection process. There is no reason why our BOT structure shouldn't mirror Clemson's. Until we get the hands of the General Assembly out of who governs our university, we will always be second fiddle to those in the Upstate.

What time was the commencement? I was wondering if he said California because he was drinking at California Dreaming beforehand.

I'll gladly drive to Cola and call him a POS to his face. The question is will the rest of you? They'll arrest me, but not if there is 50 of us.

I think a large part of our problem is that the pure ineptitude of our BOT and the meddling by the General Assembly in USC affairs hasn’t been that widely apparent to many Gamecock alumni, students, fans, and supporters until recently.
Most South Carolina natives know that politics and self-interested asshats have plagued our university for its entire existence, but it’s the out-of-state Gamecocks and alumni who generally are unaware of just how bad it is, and they make up a big part of our support base. I’m hoping the past few years have finally provided the media attention that we’ve needed to actually get some sort of movement going. We have always been a largely apathetic fanbase and student body.
Whether it’s McMaster jamming Caslen through, Caslen’s constant flubs, Darla’s scathing letter, Muschamp’s buyout, and our new medical facility being held hostage in exchange for Frank’s job security, there’s no shortage of examples of how our university is a shite show.
I’ve withdrawn all yearly donations to the school and athletics, so I can’t do anything more financially, but I’d happily participate in some sort of public event to voice my displeasure with the direction of the school and its decision makers.

This is also a problem, one which nobody at the university will talk about. Having 44% of your freshman class being from out-of-state is an absolute disgrace for a state school. It was half that less than 20 years ago. And therein lies the problem. If you come from somewhere else and go to USC, there's a high chance you leave after you graduate. You then don't vote in any of our state elections, which means USC issues aren't at the forefront. So the more out-of-state students we take, the less political influence we have. And with our piss poor football program and Clemson's multiple national titles, it's obvious who those not predisposed to support either team will root for. I will advise my children to never attend the University of South Carolina, and that saddens me.

I think we got another kracken you need to release my man!

Welp.
Starting to think getting in the faces of our BOT members isn't actually a bad idea. Bring back tar-and-feathering for these clowns.

Right, and the BOT rejected it.
One board member (who has incredibly been on the board since 1982), said that “I think we need to sit back and we ought to look into it.”
The board is completely out of touch with reality.

What’s the darla Moore letter?

She got really upset that no one from the school sent her any condolences regarding her mother's death. I believe she said she would stop giving to the school and regretted ever giving to the school - more or less.
Now, I don't know how I feel about that letter. It was as unnecessary slight and a completely unforced error on the school's part. But the letter also came off as a spoiled child who was throwing a tantrum because she didn't get the attention she believed she was entitled to.

I am one of the out of state alums, just barely, but a third generation grad. So it is correct that we don't hear a lot of what goes on.
I understand the embarrassment from the speech and the dislike of supporting Tanner. These are all emotional things.
Does he and his policies run the school well?
I look at all the complaints about the new LSU President and I was at school at the end of the Holderman era. I don't get the day in day out news of USC but I doubt he is more embarrassing than Holderman.

Like no one in a school capacity or no one from the school sent anything in a personal capacity?
Not really the business of the school itself to send anything, but I can see why she would be fussy about certain people on an individual level not doing so. Of all the things to write a letter complaining about our University, this is meh.

I think most would agree that his policies haven’t really had any significant impact, which is probably mostly due to COVID, but certainly nothing positive has happened in his tenure.
Our academic standing hasn’t improved and athletics have gotten worse. But it’s the constant public displays of incompetence and multiple foot-in-mouth comments that he’s made that has made it clear he’s just not qualified for his position. When all we hear out of Columbia is bad news, it’s time for change.
