Why are People so quick to choose Surtain over Stingley?

Stingley Career 2 seasons:
65 total tackles, 50 solo, and 6 ints. To go along with 1 forced fumble and 2 fumble recoveries.
This season:
27 tackles, 19 solo and 0 ints. 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery.
Surtain career 3 seasons:
147 total tackles 80 solo and 4 ints. 2 fumble recoveries, with 4 forced fumbles.
This season:
35 tackles, 28 solo, and 1 int. 0 forced fumbles, with 1 fumble recovery.
Stingley has had the best season out of the 2 with his 2019 stats.
And their numbers are not very off this year. Also you must take into account Stingley missed I think like 2-3 whole games this season. And some half’s of some games due to injury. I don’t think Surtain has missed that much if I recall.
I must say however, going through these numbers these are easily the Top 2 DBs in the nation.

I mean atleast he will guard Smith as he (Stingley) was injured.

Because people have watched them play. People avoid throwing at Surtain because it's a very low % play. He has the highest grade on PFF of eligible DB's and ideal size for an NFL corner.
Stingley OTOH has given up over 400 yards just trying to cover Davonta Smith in 2 games. People aren't afraid to throw his direction. He's talented, but he's not the same caliber player at this point in his development. He's got the physical tools to be the #1 CB next year (top 5 pick) with some improvement

Surtain has never faced a top WR. And if their is one he doesn’t cover him.

Nobody is 100% positive that elite talent can embarrass Surtain.
