My dad was nearly run down by PP once in Marietta....he was in a cross walk and PP apparently didn't see him and stopped just short of running him over.....he got out of the car and was VERY apologetic....making certain he wasn't hurt, asked him where he was heading, if he needed a ride....etc. Daddy was a Hawks fan so knew who it was of course.....about a month after this were at a Hawks game and, during warm ups we were almost court side...PP came up, asked if he was doing OK, they joked about it and he went on about his business. I was about 6 or 7 and it impressed me no end...went around for weeks telling people my Dad and PP were friends LOL. Dude was a fantastic basketball player and died way too young. And he and my Dad were friends LOL.....

I remember as a kid PP was one of those guys I was very excited to use in video games. Steph before Steph basically.

I remember his comments after he signed with the Hawks. A reporter asked him what were his contract terms, he replied "$200 a week and room and board"
I also recall reading an article around that same time that his biggest fear was that he'd "play in the NBA for 10 years and then drop dead at 40".
RIP, Pistol. you were fun to watch in a sport that is deadly dull nowadays (at least on the pro level).

Will always be GOAT in my fan book. Loved to watch him play.

5 out of 10 players listed by Rupp as the best players he coached against were black. Rupp was the first coach in the SEC to try to recruit black players and he got death threats from SEC fans over it.

Pete had 69 points against Alabama on the road. It was an NCAA record at the time and again no 3-point line
Was at that game and though it was close and
Bama finally won it, 106-104 , every eye was on
Maravich entire game. Not only did Pete play
without a 3-point line but also no shot clock and
not eligible as a freshman by rule.

I was there when he scored 69pts against us in Tuscaloosa in 1970. I was only 10 years old but I still remember him scoring what seemed like every time LSU had the ball.

Pete was simply amazing and he did everything with part of his heart missing. I forgot what section was missing but it was like 25% of his heart

I saw him in person at Memorial Coliseum when I was a kid. We cheered for UK but we also cheered for Pistol Pete. I heard them interview Rupp and ask him why he didn't play a gimmick defense to stop him. Rupp said he was going to stop the other 4 players that we could, and we would win if we did that and we did. Truth was Rupp was a huge fan of Pistol Pete and liked watching him play. Those were fun games with scores well over 100 points. Pete got 65 one game and Dan Issel had 51.
Pete would pull up and shoot 35 foot shots, some went in. It was fun to watch his ball handling and passing. He was a show. RIP Pete. You brought joy to basketball.

He would’ve had more than 57, if there had been a three point line. He would’ve stayed out there.

Who the hell is Johnny Neuman?
Child, please. He only dropped 63 on y'all one game. Led the nation in scoring...after Maravich.

It's still the airplane hangar record.
