Did Kirby ever say why he abandoned the run against bama?

SIAP or discussed. I'm not a regular follower of UGA football but I watched the game between UGA and bama Saturday night and the UGA O-Line was pushing the bama D-line around. Just trying to find out why Kirby abandoned the run even after leading in the first half.

Idk he was gashing us up and down the field.

Idk if he felt the game was getting away from him (which it wasn’t) or that SB4 could handle more responsibility or what. Very head scratching.

No. I think when they went down 10 and our receivers kept getting behind their secondary he saw the writing on the wall. Bamas defense while not good was managing to get stops at opportune times and had done better against the runs in second half. Likely is seeing schematic changes in second half that made them abandon would be my guess.

Is this a Kirby thing? I remember LSU fans wondering the same thing in 2018.

UGA may have the most talented O-Line in the nation. It makes no sense not to lean on them. None what so ever.

Kirby seems to out smart himself. "Let's pass because because running is working."

Watch the cfb nerds vid on it. They explain how while UGA was effective running they weren't quite effective enough to have a chance of winning by just running it. Their last drive prior to the 90 td td was mostly ineffective runs.

Good group, but not that good. They were running it pretty well, but it was a thin margin thing. They were getting 3-5 yards a carry, but they weren't breaking many big runs in the 2nd half. It's really hard to drive all the way down the field doing that. They did it once, but they were going to have a hard time doing it 1-2 more times (even against our shitty defense).

The drive that ended in the INT near the goal line I was pretty surprised they took 2 really difficult shots on 1st and 2nd down against Surtain that led to a tough 3rd and 10, and in turn the INT.

Right. I vaguely remember saying to myself, why is UGA not running on us? They are popping 4-6 yards a run. Thanks to Kirby they decide to play to LSU's strength (DBs) with their weakness (WRs).

They didnt really abandon it until they were down 10 at the start of the 4th. It wouldve been dumb to run the ball at that point. Its not like throwing it wasnt working the entire 1st half as well

Should they have maybe run it on 1st and 10 from the Bama 25 when they were down 3 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd? Maybe but they had just completed a 40 yard pass to get them to that point

When you are down two scores nearing the 4th, you absolutely can't run to win. You gotta play catch up and pass to get back in it and get the lead. You can't run to win without a lead.

I would take that all day long against a bama D and wouldn't pass until bama D is forced to press. UGA's WRs (except Pickens) are no match for bama's DBs. I wouldn't have played to bama's defensive strength that early.

They were trying to thread the needle by taking calculated shots on designed plays (the wheel play to Burton, the matchup with Cook/Harris) and then getting a couple of long drives where they stayed in good down and distance. It worked as well as they could have hoped for in the 1st half, but in the 2nd half, we made enough plays to get them in 3rd and longs, and combined with us stretching the score it kind of forced them to throw.

I thought Monken did about all he could outside of a few bad series (the aforementioned trip to the red zone where they threw to the outside 2x on 1st and 2nd down).

why he abandoned the run

It may have been based on what Alabama was doing differently in the second half.

Since the defense was getting gashed early, it makes sense that they would adjust to either sell out for the run, or show something else in the secondary to bait Bennett into beating them through the air.

He looked a lot more confused in the second half of the game, so one would assume it was a little of both.

Kirby’s alter ego, Curby, arrived.

2nd Half

1st drive (24-20)
1st and 10, sack loss of 2
2nd and 12, 7 yard run
3rd and 5, incomplete
Punt

2nd drive (24-20)
1st and 10, 4 yard run
2nd and 6, 5 yard run
3rd and 1, 3 yard run
1st and 10, 14 yard pass
1st and 10, 4 yard run
2nd and 6, 2 yard run
3rd and 4, 2 yard pass
Punt

3rd drive (24-27)
1st and 10, 36 yard pass
1st and 10, 10 yard run
1st and 10, incomplete pass
2nd and 10, incomplete pass
3rd and 10, interception

4th drive (24-34)
1st and 10, delay of game
1st and 15, incomplete pass
2nd and 15, 9 yard run
3rd and 6, interception

If I was a Georgia fan the only sequence there that I have an issue with were the passes on 1st and 2nd down on the 3rd drive.

Your post proves that he went too pass heavy. Bama was getting gashed up the middle like a Korean hooker.

1st and 10, 4-yard run
1st and 10, 4-yard run
1st and 10, 10-yard run

2nd and 6, 5-yard run
2nd and 6, 2-yard run
2nd and 12, 7-yard run
2nd and 15, 9-yard run

3rd and 1, 3-yard run

They had 1 run over 5 yards that wasn't in a 2nd and 10+ situation. The rest were between 2-5 yards.

They were moving it ok, but they certainly weren't gashing us. And if they'd just continued to run the ball up the middle the odds that they do that the entire way down the field are pretty slim to none.

They had to mix in throwing the ball some, and their odds were much better on early downs than on 3rd down at 5 when everyone knew it was coming.
