The plantation referenced in the article was obtained by his grandson through marriage in 1906 after Cornelius was dead and buried. Cornelius Vanderbilt never had any ownership in it. His ties to slavery were spinning cotton from southern plantation in his textiles mills.

You're telling me that a Robber-Baron who made a fortune exploiting poor whites and poor blacks in the North ALSO exploited slave labor in South?!
Next, you're gonna tell me that Robber Baron actually refers to an unscrupulous dickhead who made his money by hook and crook and off the misery and loss of others rather than referring to a kind, gentle, and loving old man we should all look up to.

Frank Vanderbilt was "a Confederate sympathizer" during the Civil War.[22] McTyeire was born into a slave-owning family and authored an essay in favor of slavery.[23] Garland owned "up to 60 slaves" before the Civil War.[23]
One of the founding trustees, Hezekiah William Foote, was a Confederate veteran and the owner of four plantations in Mississippi, including Mount Holly.[24] The Treasurer of the Board of Trust from 1872 to 1875, Alexander Little Page Green, whose portrait hangs in Kirkland Hall,[25] was a Methodist preacher and a former slave owner.[26] His son-in-law, Robert A. Young, was a Methodist minister who served as the Financial Secretary on the Board of Trust from 1874 to 1882, retiring from the board in 1902.[19] The Elliston family, who owned slaves, donated some of their Burlington Plantation, in one of the first expansions of the campus.[when?][27]
I mean.... it's all there.

Yes, but he did enable the defeat of the self-appointed “President of Nicaragua," William Walker (also from Nashville), who had stolen a country, gained US support as its legitimate leader, and reinstated slavery in Nicaragua to gain favor from southern states.
So, Vanderbilt's direct support helped end the act of "filibustering," and protected the Central American states from be overthrown and directly controlled by foreign militias. But, it did sort of seal the deal for persistent US interventionism into Latin America by major private US businesses and oftentimes directly/indirectly by the US government. So, I'm not sure who the big winner was in the long run.
