I thought this as well when I was a teenager who had never lived there and only visited once.
Having lived near Auburn and near Tuscaloosa, there isn't much difference other than Auburn has better schools and a better restaurant scene. Opelika is to Auburn what Northport is to Tuscaloosa.

That is why it is the second fastest growing area in the state behind Huntsville. Why it has the second best school system behind Mountain Brook. And it’s growth is not because they are offering the moon to out of state students to increase enrollment to 40k. T-town has actually become a town where they pay people to live. lol.
