I figured a fog pushed him up some steps. He liked baseball more than football, so he needed to keep his head on a swivel

Freshman left-hander Connor Prielipp was the Opening Day starter on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, walked four and struck out seven on 68 pitches and 39 strikes. He became just the second true freshman to start Game 1 for Alabama since 1968 -- when freshmen were allowed to play. He’s the only one to get the win in the start.

Did the Prielipp kid just tell MLB teams he wasn't interested? A cold weather lefty with good size who can touch 92 is usually something MLB GMs are all over.

He topped out at 90 at the 2018 WWBA event and was sitting 88-90. The year before he topped out at 86.

My guess is he wasn't quite intriguing enough to use a Top 5 round pick on and therefore fell into the draft late and follow category. Basically perfect for us. He's gonna be something by the time he leaves in 2022.

That is pretty typical for a pitching prospect from a Northern state. Especially a lefty. From what I have seen Bohannon is targeting a lot of those kids. Also some Canadians. Pretty smart strategy really. We can offer them a lot more than the schools near them and the top programs don't really go up there as much because they don't need to.

Yep - it's kind of the last high upside area of prospects left. Kids in the warm weather states are seen so much and are analytically analyzed in a way that was unheard of 5-10 years ago. There are going to be very few kids from the Sun Belt that go under the radar unless they just don't play summer ball, and the way that velo rate/swing speed are analyzed and the ability to project based on size....there just isn't a lot you can do to find kids that others don't. And right now it's gonna be hard for us to go to a kid everyone wants and beat LSU, Florida, Carolina, etc for that kid.

The only margins left are kids like Preilipp and the Canadians (and the Canadian players are being scouted at a higher rate every year now).

Heck, the Braves implemented that same strategy to maximize their draft monies the last few years with Anderson from upstate NY and Soroka from Canada.

They also have a lot more wear and tear on them even at 18. Especially the pitchers. That's why you will so often see guys who sit comfortably at 96 and touching 98 on occasion when they are drafted be more 91-93 and touching 95 by the time they make the majors 3 years later.

Yep exactly. I remember in reading up on Anderson how he threw something like 125 innings combined his entire last year in high school - combined high school and summer ball.

The only other area that also kind of works that way is kids who play 3 sports and don't play much in the summer and are raw. But even those kids still get raw data taken and teams/schools see the underlying abilities. And that just doesn't happen nearly as much as it did 5+ years ago.

In 2018 he would have been a jr., correct? It has been my experience that 88-90 as a sitting speed is very clearly high level D1 velo. as a jr. As far as high round stuff, it can be if a guy has good pitchability and makeup and a plus secondary pitch. 92 is average MLB stuff these days, so he would not have plus stuff from that standpoint. Not even average. That does not mean that he isn’t a good prospect or that he won’t one day be drafted highly. It would be interesting to see the scouting reports on him. Without flipping over to PG, I wonder if he did not have great competition, or got little exposure, played very few PG events, or what not. Canada also is not a hotbed for baseball talent. I’m sure that played a part. He also may well have given strong indication that he was going to college, causing a team to take a late round flier on him.

I will say that it is great to have a guy who can hit 90 with some regularity now.

Yea - you are correct, he had draftable stuff. He was a Top 250 player, I think, so he wasn't totally out of the blue.

It was more of his lack of being seen due to only 1-2 big tournaments and no high school ball that would be deemed competitive he was #250 instead of #35 or something. I don't remember hearing much about his desire for draft/Bama, mainly because I don't think it was a huge concern. He's a small guy, and I haven't seen his motion much so I'm not sure how clean it is, but I imagine the combo of his size/motion/low mileage led folks to believe they could add 3-4 mph. Seems like he might have already added 1-2 based on what I read yesterday.

Excited to see the kid from Montreal on Sunday.

Just looked him up. He has pretty good size and commensurate stuff. From photo on team roster, he looks to have a lot of room for growth. He was pretty highly ranked in spite of not having done the Jupiter event and not playing with a high powered summer club like Elite or Evoshield. Perhaps he did a number of PG’s indoor events that they do in the mid-west. Still, he is sort of a nobody from nowhere hoping somebody finds his 90 mph fastball by chance.

I don’t blame him however, for choosing southern weather and coeds, a comfortable bed, good food, nice stadium and clubhouse and a nice bus over PB&Js in the clubhouse prior to a lengthy practice for less than minimum wage in some dumpy rookie league town whilst sharing an apartment with 3 other guys.

Yep - he's the type of kid we have to find to win right now. Tip of the cap to Bo and company for working their arse off and having the contacts to find kids like him.

Which one is the Canadian kid? Since my boy’s career has seemed to come to an end, I’ve lost a little of my drive to keep up during my mourning period.

I feel ya - did your son play college ball? It's incredible to me how much the summer circuit has changed since I was doing it in 2002-2003.

The freshman Canadian who is starting Sunday is Antoine Jean, from Montreal

Shaky start for Connor : 2 HBP, 1B, but got a DP and a popout to get out of it unscathed
