And yet it was Auburn who avoided an AQ OOC.

After their 2003 season, would you really blame them?

Auburn's bowl win was against a very solid Virginia Tech who played USC close (24-13 final). USC had 3x < 7 point wins (2 against unranked teams) and another unimpressive 8 point win against an unranked Oregon St.

Then that team blasted Choklahoma.

Counting the vacated win against OU, USC only had 3 wins against ranked teams that year. Auburn had 4 and played the extra game in the SEC CG.

OU also only had 3 teams against ranked teams, and had a live scrimmage vs. a 7-4 Colorado team in the B12 CG.
It really doesn't matter that AU 'avoided' an AQ team.

USC and Oklahoma were anointed as pre-season NC contenders. Since neither of them lost, their matchup in the BCSCG was preordained.

We could have beaten three AQ teams and it wouldn't have mattered.

Except Bowling Green was the difference between OU and Auburn.

Bama, Texas, Florida, and Cinci would have been your CFP.

Clemson would play Oklahoma. There would be a chance for a split NC but I think the winner of OSU and LSU would be the more formal champ.

After Clemson smashed OU there would have been a split national title. What a disaster.

Auburn died so that we all could live.

But I don't see the human element allowing an undefeated defending national champion to be left out.

If this were still BCS then computer polls would be 1/3 of the equation and they are heavily in favor of LSU and Ohio St.

For the human element to overcome that, Clemson would have to be ahead of LSU and Ohio State by a decent margin in both the polls.

For 2009, it's likely, although TCU was ranked 4th and it would have caused a huge stink.

The matchups would have been:

1-Alabama/4-Cincinnati
2-t.u./3-Florida

Ok, what about talent level then? Auburn had 5 guys drafted that spring (4x 1st rounders, 1x 7th rounder) and USC had 5 guys drafted as well (2x 1st rd, 2x 2nd rd, 1x 7th rd - and that 7th rounder was a bench player that had no impact on USC's season).

Like I said earlier, anyone saying OU or USC blows out 2004 Auburn is just a casual fan of CFB.
