Chase Young has had a great year, but personally don’t think he should be invited to New York. Just wondering if Derrick Thomas was a finalist the season he had 27 sacks even though they weren’t officially recorded which is stupid? As an LSU fan who was a chiefs fan growing up I loved Thomas. Absolute legend and class act

I don’t believe so, but he should’ve been. He’s my favorite all time Bama player

I think he was like 10th on the list. Chase Young couldn’t sniff DT’s jock. Chase Young sucks compared to DT

Other than Charles Woodson
I think Hugh Green was the closest defensive player to winning the Heisman from 1980 To now
ETA: it was actually Te’o

He finished 10th. Defensive players are rarely considered these days, even with more open minded voters. They were completely ignored then.
But 1988 was also the year Barry Sanders won.

He was probably getting some co-ed pregnant that night.

I think there needs to be more defensive players in the Heisman discussion

Nobody can touch that

Amazing stat. He also had 7 in a single game against the Seahawks.
Defensive players don't get enough consideration for the Heisman. Young shouldn't beat Burrow, but there have been a number of deserving defensive players who at least deserved to be in New York.

Charles Woodson won it, and he was the 8th leading tackler on his own team.
Not saying Young deserves to win, because he doesn't, but the impact of defensive players is measured a bit differently.

Woods on had an overall imprint on games. He played offense, defense and special teams. He scored on every unit.

I saw him play against Penn State in Birmingham. They could not block him.
You could not appreciate his speed off the edge unless you saw him live. Just a tremendous player.

That's all good and everything but, you can't really compare Thomas to modern players.
Thomas played his NFL career almost completely in the 90's, starting in 1989. His years in the NFL were from 20 to 30 years ago.
Players today are better, stronger, faster, smarter, and hit harder and play stronger than those old dinosaurs.
Derrick Thomas would be a joke in the NFL today. They didn't have good nutrition back then, didn't eat right. They didn't have modern day weight training regimens.
Chase Young is ten times the player Thomas was just because he was born in a more enlightened and advanced era. 300 pound OLinemen are as fast today as Thomas was back then; it's the evolution of the game.

Terrell Suggs had 24
And DTs "27" includes several half sacks, so the 27 that's thrown out there is a little disingenuous. Still one of the top pass rushing seasons ever, don't get me wrong
