Candidate for Memphis HC or following Norvell to FSU as Asst. HC and DC...

Would seem to be a lateral move to FSU but Norvell is an offensive coach by trade and it would allow Lanning more autonomy to develop whereas at UGA he's running CKS defense and under his "thumb"

Good analysis. Also heard he could go with Pittman to Arky. I really like Schumann, so if Lanning leaves I hope he is ready and he and Kirby can get it done.

Why would he go to FSU?

May just be angling for more money here. Or at least I hope so.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he did it. Kirby doesn’t do much managing or total team coaching when the defense is on the field.
That jokers yelling, moving people around, trying to call in plays, etc. If he wants to be that involved then just do both roles lol.

I know that’s not reality, it’s tongue in cheek.

So it’s the belief that Lanning could better develop being on his own versus developing under Kirby who many would agree is one of the top defensive coaches in the country?
Doesn’t make sense to me.

No, idea being Lanning is ready to try being on his own without Kirby.

After (1) year being the DC? He is 3 or 4 years removed from being a graduate assistant. I believe that it would be early for him to want to move laterally simply to be on his own and to a program that is the mess that is FSU. That is, unless there’s some conflicts working with Kirby?

Yep, no one should be surprised.

When it gets to crunch time Lanning isn't calling the defense, it's Kirby. Lanning probably just wants to be "the man" and not work under the heavy thumb of Kirby, just like the OP said.

No I don’t think there is conflict. All coaches want to challenge themselves and go off on their own. You could certainly make the argument he might not be successful due to his lack of experience. However, he did an excellent job this year.

I hear you but that's what Pruitt did without the DC title first.

Kirby dictates the defense, calls the plays on the sidelines, and Lanning basically stands there and gets yelled at when one of Kirbys calls flops. If I were good enough to be a DC at a top school, then I would not be happy at Georgia under Kirby.

Lanning has a huge raise coming... right now he’s not paid like a Broyles award finalist but he’s earned it and he’s going to get it. These “rumors” coming out is just going to speed up the process imo
