The UGA "G" logo

Serious question. Who was the first to create it? Obviously, Georgia, Green Bay, and Grambling are all very similar. I always liked it because it sort of resembles a football with the oval shape and the horizontal line representing the laces. Someone was original and two of you are clearly imitators though. Not that there's anything wrong with copying such a cool logo given all 3 of you are in different levels of play. I imagine there's probably countless high schools that use it too. Does anyone know the history?

It might be a copycat logo but it's super cool IMO

I thought GB got it from Georiga.

Packers equipment manager came up with it under Lombardi. Dooley liked it and copied it

Green Bay. I believe both UGA and Grambling had to secure rights from GB before using it.

So it's not as old I thought it would have been.

Looks like I was wrong. Georgia pays the Packers to use it.

The team used a number of different logos prior to 1961, but the "G" is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet. The Packers hold the trademark on the "G" logo and have granted limited permission to other organizations to utilize a similar logo, such as the University of Georgia and Grambling State University.

Dooley copied it from Green Bay. The AD called Green Bay and asked to use it.

I believe the story was posted earlier this week but the basic gist is that the Packers had the logo first, them Georgia adopted their version of the logo, which looks identical to me but sharper eyes than mine claim that UGA's version has slightly different dimensions. Anyway, UGA asked permission from Green Bay to use the logo, which Green Bay granted. I believe Gambling State did essentially the same thing.

From 11 Alive news story.
quote:
A Packers team equipment manager under legendary coach Vince Lombardi came up with the team's helmet logo in 1961. He designed the shape of the logo to represent a football and the G to mean Green Bay.
A couple years later in Athens, Georgia, Vince Dooley was redesigning the team's uniforms, including changing the helmets from silver to red, according to the school. His idea was to have a black G on a white background on the helmet. John Donaldson, a newly hired backfield coach, volunteered his wife, Anne, to help with the redesign. Anne had a degree in commercial art from the university, and created the G logo as we know it today, matching Dooley's "forward looking" vision he had for the G.
While the Georgia's G dimensions and colors were different, the university still sought approval from Green Bay to use the logo. The Packers granted it. A year later, Grambling State also designed a G logo for its helmet, and the Packers also granted the school permission.
Georgia's G designed in 1963 is slightly slimmer compared to the Packers' G. It has remained the same since, while Green Bay's logo was slightly altered to have a gold border in 1980.

Loys of high schools also use the same G

Does this kind of thing keep you up at night? A “G”, or any other letter with an oval around it is not that uncommon.

This played out crap says more about the person using it as an insult than it does about whoever it’s about

UGA changed it slightly to make the edges more rounded *which GB now does)
Dooley liked the logo & we reached out to the Packers for permission
