The 247 UCLA writer has told Marcello that Allen Greene is a leading candidate for the USC vacant AD job.
From Tracy Pierson; UCLA mod:

quote:

Apparently USC has offered the job to a good number of candidates who have turned it down.

USC, too, is offering a salary that would make the USC athletic director position one of the highest paid in the country.

From what I'm hearing, one of the current leading candidates is Allen Greene, the current athletic director at Auburn. Greene, 42, has only been at Auburn a year, and was the AD at Buffalo for three years previous to that.

Marcello can confirm that Greene was on the west coast last week, but doesn’t know if it was for family or business reasons. Believe I read he has family in Seattle. Just a heads up.

USC has had a lot of people turn them down for a reason. Hopefully Greene understands that.

Maybe we could hire the associate AD at UF? What's his name?

How horrible would it be to report to work in Compton everyday?

We certainly need to throw money at Greene. He’s one of the lowest paid in the conference.

A snag may be we don’t have a long term president yet.

I'd take that job in a heartbeat.

It’s not in Compton but the area around it isn’t nice either Culver City is a short drive and a nice place to live.

Anyway, you wouldn’t know it on campus.
I’ve been there quite a few times.

Despite the griping on this board, I would say our athletics are significantly more stable than UCLAs. That’s job security for AG, and we can pay him handsomely. But ucla’s a glamour school and he may want that vibe - I don’t know his personality well enough

I like AG but at this point it's really more a promise that he'll grow into the role than it is any level of expertise or experience.

Offer him what's fair and if he walks, he walks. Nothing is happening with Gus this year so that's not really a consideration. I'd prefer to keep him but I don't think it's embarrassing to lose someone to USC nor is he irreplaceable yet.

I like him too but everything is stable right now and Gus’s status won’t really be up to him anyway and it looks increasingly unlikely a change will happen soon. If he goes then now isn’t the worst timing.

But he has seemed like a good fit so far. Made some key extensions happen, navigated an awkward situation with Bruce and Leath, and has allegedly done some critical work on fundraising for the FOF. Seems like our student athletes are staying out of trouble and the programs seem happy. I’d like to keep him around

It's not the early 90s. Most of Compton isn't that bad anymore. Like Jones said, he would probably live in West LA, which is very nice.

Ten years ago, would've been a no brainer for him to leave. USC is a big job, compensated to live in LA would be nice, but widely publicized, much to their sports fans frustration, that they've got financial issues and are not looking to make major moves in athletics in the near-term. I think he stays for the security and balance he's got right now, time to keep improving.

I like AG a lot, however, his sample size is small. I'm not saying he won't be a superstar AD, he very well could. I'd really hate to do the Auburn thing and saddle the school with an enormous contract with a ridiculous buyout for a guy that still is fairly new with some potential question marks.

Kinda like the whole market-rate debate w/ Gus a few years back, I guess.

He is just now figuring out the job he entered over a year ago. His results aren’t going to be tremendously positive right off the bat. Yet, there have been a few positives of his tenure so far:
-He’s frugal and practical with the budget. He trimmed 10% of the budget from all sports programs so that the money could be put to better use- aka fan interests, stadium upgrades, etc. He also culled away overhead costs by scrapping redundant positions within the athletic department with ambiguous responsibilities or less than stellar results.

- He helped Bruce keep his job. Enough said

- The recruits love him. He’s a great AD that helps with recruiting any way that he can.

-He talked to Gus about opening up. Greene is a very personable guy.

I feel like we are just NOW seeing what he can do. We do not need him to walk away.

Edit: I realize he doesn’t deserve all the credit for last year’s success (CWS, Final 4), but he deserves a salary comparable to the other SEC AD’s. He shouldn’t be near the bottom.

Gouge is not going anywhere soon. From what I have heard the target is May 2021 at the soonest.

I too would be pretty let down if we let AG leave. I agree that we're just beginning to see how effective of an AD he can be. I like the small things he's done so far, and he brings a neutral, balanced perspective to our department which is so much needed.

Lastly, I know JJ hired most of the coaches we have now, but I feel like something has changed within the AD that allows coaches to be more autonomous. I think we're seeing results from our football, bball, and baseball programs. This might be a little bit of a stretch though.
