As I understand it, cbs gets first pick of weekly SEC games for the 2:30 cst slot and only one first pick every season for prime time. They chose UGA-ND this season and I can’t blame them. There are a shat load of ND fans all over this country.

Yes on my re read of his post you’re absolutely correct. And my answer now is I have no idea why? Perhaps the Hebrews at ABC are more powerful than the Hebrews at CBS?

Yes strategically do they not want to do night games or is their a reason they are limited
My only guess is SEC limits them as part of deal with ESPN
Otherwise SEC would want them broadcast as many primetime games as possible
That said I don't understand current landscape or contracts

It has to be contractual. I would guess ESPN owns the right to most of the primetime games. That's why you see most of their marquee games at night while CBS has the 2:30 slot for theirs.

That's my guess they are protecting the ABC time slot.

I’m glad CBS passed on the LSU/Alabama game. LSU was not doing its part to keep it competitive and exciting. Time to move on

It's not a matter of 'protecting' ABC, but rather ESPN. The SEC has a deal for primetime games on either ESPN or ESPN2. ESPN wouldn't want their nightly SEC game going up against the best game from the conference on CBS. CBS feels like they're in a good position with the 2:30 slot. So all three parties are happy. The SEC has the best tv deal (ignoring the money, CBS is getting a steal) of all the conferences.

The 9-6 game in 2011 wasn’t originally scheduled for a night game. CBS worked a deal with ABC/ESPN to move some games around.
That boring defensive struggle blew out the ratings. When A&M and Mizzou joined the conference the following year, CBS added a single SEC night game as part of reworking the TV contract because of the new markets.
ABC doesn’t want Prime time competition from CBS multiple times a season, and CBS doesn’t want ABC airing SEC games.
So, CBS gets first choice, but only one night game. Disney gets to spread the rest of the games across it’s networks, except for ABC.

I am not concerned time of game but was curious overall about how it worked

CBS has the first priority contract with ESPN sweeping up the rest. However the night game has always been in CBS contract. Actually, I thought they got two but usually burned one at the beginning of the season.
