Nope. It was because the AD had gone rogue at the point. He'd been called back to Knoxville and wasn't responding to anyone. Once he was fired, there was really no going back to it.

Kiffin would like a head coaching job . His program sucks . Maybe Arkansas can hire him. Phil is not going to hire a coach that steals his attention.

I don’t know, but allowing Phil to have the impact he does is a mistake. I get it. He’s an all time great, but there’s a reason he’s not coaching anymore.

UT fired the AD who had an agreement in principle with Leach.
When Fulmer became AD, he immediately killed the deal. Most believe it was because Phil wanted a defensive guy.

Human nature can be a bitch. Mike Leach is his own man, marches to the beat of his own drum and most control freaks (Fulmer would qualify) can't handle that. For instance Nick Saban couldn't coach in a dept with Fulmer as the AD. But Mal Moore was a grown arse man who didn't feel threatened by a grown arse coach and was man enough to hire him and support him and gain/earn Saban's respect.
