The "X all time record over Y bodes well for X" argument is dumb.

I've seen Texas fans flaunt this a lot.
News flash, records from the 1980s dont matter anymore , and have no say in coming games.
It's like saying "We own the all time record. You dont stand a chance."
Yes, good job. I must have missed when those 50 year old players got eligibility again.
This isnt directed at anyone, I just think using this arguement when discussing games is dumb. It's purely bragging rights.

So you’re saying that we’re beating Bama this year.

Did you beat them in the 1900s? If so, I like your chances.

Checked the book and it looks like we did.

Oh shite. Congrats on the win in advance!

Series history and streaks are really big with the average gambler. Not so much with the sharps. I believe that's part of why it is played up.

Well, it does factor into the game. If a team has a huge winning record over another, the players think that maybe there is something about that team. The fans will fret and complain about how that team just "always gets the luck, the plays, the refs, etc. and we just do not stand a chance" and the players start to believe that.
It becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Agreed.
Gator fans still try to reference Spurrier's dominance over the Dawgs like it has some predictive power for today.

Very true along with preseason rankings or "what your team did last year" is stupid and predicting success if college football. Put it this way, AU is 2012 went 3-9 and how did that translate to 2013? Even the season before means very very little

It’s like trying to use historical weather data to predict what the weather tomorrow will be like. Even though your data is valid, there are simply too many factors at play to be able to speak confidently about the outcome of a single event.
Now, if you want to use historical data to predict future trends, that’s much more valid. We may not be able to say, “Team X beats Team Y about two thirds of the time, so there is a 66% chance that Team X wins this year’s game,” because that’s too specific. But if we predict that, say, out of the next twenty years, there will be a 66% chance that Team X beats Team Y in any given year, well, that’s much more likely to be close to the mark.

The truth is, records from the nineties and 2000's don't either. Last decade? Maybe. But you sorta get a sense when the worm has turned. Think Bama gave a shite after Saban got it rolling that Auburn and Tubs beat them six straight times?

Florida fans love to talk about the 80s and early 90s. Hell spurrier still has an office.

Ask them what their record vs Alabama was going into the 2009 NC.
