James Brooks in 1976.

He was a senior in high school (Warner Robins) that year, but my high school team traveled to Warner Robins to play them that year and they beat us 90-0. That Warner Robins team was recognized by publications who covered such things back in the day of being the high school "national champion".

So all that just to say that I really started paying attention to athletically elite football players because of what I saw in that game and followed Brooks' career to Auburn where he also excelled and then followed it to the NFL where he also excelled.

Unfortunately, he never excelled in the School of Good People.

McFarland
Faulk
Tee Martin

Just a couple Tigers and a Vol. Obviously the list is longer but those were my favorite players to watch.

The first play I can actually remember was Van Tiffin's GW kick in the 1985 Iron Bowl. I remember sitting in living room with family and parent's friends, mixed crowd of Alabama and Auburn fans. I was 7.

Pretty much just remember Alabama players from that year really. Guys like Mike Shula, Bobby Humphrey, Howard Cross, Cornelius Bennett.

Derrick Thomas I think was on that team but not sure if he played much that year. He remains to this day my favorite player of all time.

Emmitt smith... was 7 the first game I went to. UF was bad, so it was easy to notice he stood out.

Or literacy

He's the one who admitted in court he couldn't read, correct?

My childhood was filled with going to Mississippi State games, but I became addicted to it with John Bond at QB running the wishbone, and my first truly memorable in-person college football experience was when State beat Alabama 6-3 in 1980.

Too young to remember this. But over time hearing stories about it, I'm convinced that a couple hundred thousand State fans were at that game.

Mike Shula and Cornelius Bennett. My grandparents were boosters. I remember Biscuit coming by the RV after the game at Legion Field and my Granddad giving him a fistful of dollars to go have fun after the game.

1985 Sugar Bowl was my first live College Experience, so I was spoiled from the start. What an ending.

Well, I can assure you there was only about 50K there that day, although it was plenty loud enough for your QB to repeatedly complain to the officials about the crowd noise. But to your point, not many Bama fans claim they were in attendance that day.

Oh, and Georgia....you're welcome.

Game was in Jackson. By and large, there were no cowbells, although you might have occasionally heard the clang of a solitary bell somebody snuck in.

In those days, they were outlawed thanks to that criminal Shug Jordan.

Billy Cannon and the Chinese Bandits were my first big memory of college football. Paul Deitzel ended up being a friend and I attended his funeral. One of the finest men to ever walk the face of this earth. I miss him, I truly do.

That was all performance art for the court to evade child support (re: my OP about he failed the School of Good People).

Many, many Auburn classmates of his came out after that bullshite and told the news (who ignored it because it was inconvenient to their anti-football message) that Brooks could read.

Now could he read WELL? Proficiently? Quickly? Probably not. You want to place some bets about how many top athletes to this day would fit that same profile?

You ready to test the Alabama lineup and force a mandatory sit-out for those who don't read at grade-level, bro? Think before you respond.
