I think targeting penalties have contributed to a less aggressive attitude towards tackling. Used to a big hit fired up defenses and headhunters were encouraged. Thst isnt the case anymore

You can still nail his azz but go for the numbers and not the headgear. We got athletes playing with an I3 processor when an I5 is required.

What Saban said and what (we think) it means: Monday (BOL)

God what a terrible comment.

Our DL problem is our crappy 2-gap "mush rush" scheme. It should be totally eliminated. All 3 DLs should always be attacking through OL gaps to get penetration into the backfield.
The whole idea of 2-gap run defense on the D-line is to free up the Mike to attack at/behind the LoS into the flow of the play. and free the Will to scrape and clean-up behind him. In order for 2-gap run D to be effective, you MUST have a headhunter that attacked from the Mike. The only true Mikes on the defense are Shane Lee and Jackson Bratton.
Pass rush from 2-gap require heavy pressure from the edge, occasional MLB or other blitz for sacks and bull rush pressure up the middle.
Having no true Mike ready to play means we should shift to a 4-3 or 3-3 with 1-gap penetration from the D-line and speed play from the 3 LB spots with Harris at Mack / Moses at Will / Kaho at Sam

I agree. Our DL & LBs appear better suited for an attacking scheme like Charlie Strong's 3-3-5 variant of his 4-3 base. It seems to me that we could incorporate the 3-3-5 attacking d-front into our "nickel" defense, especially vs hunh pass-heavy offenses.

Send in your resume and let’s make this happen.
But seriously how do they not see this issue on film? Play after play of it not working?

I see talk of a 3-3, but where does a pass rush come from?
Posted on 10/13/20 at 9:28 pm to CrimsonBoz
Charlie Strong's forté: 4-3 base / 3-3-5 variant. Maybe we could install some 3-3-5 stunts & blitzes during the bye-week.

3-3-5 - run downs
DT Barmore (Dale or T Smith)
DE Mathis / Young
3-3-5 pass downs - Splitting gap for inside rush (penetration)
DT Barmore (T Smith)
DE Ray / Anderson
Send 1 LB to blitz at times (Kaho/Moses/Harris)
Send Star or CB or Safety every nce in a while to disrupt
In a 3-4 the LB's are the high tackle guys
In a 4-3 or 3-3 the DL penetrators are to take a higher # of tackles away from the LB's at or behind the LoS

Charlie Strong knows the 3-3-5 well. Maybe we could switch to it during our bye-week.
Not even Strong runs a base 3-3-5 anymore.

Strong doesnt run anything anymore.
Check out the link Panthers posted. It reads like the 3-3-5 never really was Strong's base defense. The 4-3 under was the base and the 3-3-5 was a variant alignment they'd use a lot and stunt from it into a 4-DL rush.

I've read it before.
He's actually used less of it at the end of his Texas tenure and his stay at USF.
It's a glorified subpackage the innovator even says that it doesn't mix well with a lot of the issues Bama's defense struggles with.
It's not a overnight or bye week cure for Bama...

I've long said this and firmly believe it still. Talent is king on defense, but you have got to have a few mean players.
Couldn’t agree more. You need a combination of seriousness and cockiness that our guys appear to desperately lack. One of my favorite quotes from any athlete is when Jon Allen was asked in an interview “how did y’all do this? Teams just simply don’t do that” (talking about the incredible defensive performance they just had), and Allen responds, without hesitation “Alabama does.” Everything about the way he answered that question embodies that winners mentality that he, and the whole defense, had. You could just tell that every single one of those guys thought just like that.
And now we get “we tried. We showed toughness.” THAT is such a losers’ mentality - I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that DJ Dale quote.
Saban has always harped on complacency, yet here we are - damn near content with that abysmal/embarrassing performance. I’ve coached 8 year olds in a rec. league that were more upset with their own performance after a regular season game than these Bama players were after that defensive showing against Ole Miss.
