That’s a tad more than a million a year and he gets to bang hot Japanese women. How the frick is Starkville a better option?
Because women in the SEC are better looking than Japan? That being said, the kid just didn’t want to go to school and that’s fine. But an example of how school will help is JT Ginn, as long as his health remains good. He’ll be a top 10 pick when he’s eligible again.

Maybe he wanted something different. He can play ball, Japanese women love baseball players more than American women, be a huge celebrity, learn japanese, and if baseball doesn't work out he can get into the financial industry, work out of Hawaii, or anywhere on the west coast and trade futures or currencies with the Japanese with someone like Goldman.

Wow, smart move. Guarantee of 7 mil.
I didn't read it was guaranteed in the article and I also heard that he has to complete the entire 6 years to receive the full amount.
The Japanese minor leagues don't screw around from my understanding...their training and conditioning are far more stringent than MLB.

I can understand going to Japan to make some money, but for 6 years?
guaranteed money is more than any guarantees he was offered last year or would be offered this year. I wouldn't necessarily want to spend 6 years in Japan personally, but from a financial perspective it's a good deal for him. He wouldn't likely be getting a big MLB deal much sooner, and if he does have actual injury issues, then this is a great deal for him. And if it works out for him, he'll get to sign anywhere he wants as a free agent when he's 25.

Why is it tax free? Japan has some of the highest income tax in the world.

As opposed to a Mississippi State degree?

Big difference between a guaranteed lump sum signing bonus and 6 year contract that pays the entire amount after the 6 year term is completed

This whole thread is kinda dumb, like your joke. Not everyone lives their lives to maximize returns, and not everyone can have their mom drop them off at SAT/ACT prep every Saturday on the way to the golf course. Maybe he likes to travel and enjoys experiencing different cultures. Maybe some morons get into Vandy. Folks can surprise you.

Series 3 for futures trading has no prerequisites and you don't even have to be affiliated with a firm. He can get a degree online from multiple accredited universities or put aside some of his 7 million dollars and finish school when he gets done with ball. Hundreds if not thousands of athletes have done it over the last 30 years.

This is fact, unless you find Japanese women particularly insatiable.

Hot White chicks, hot black chicks, hot Japanese chicks..if you’re young and have a million dollars..get as much as you can. Hell, two chicks at the same time. That’s what I’d do if I had a million dollars.

Is it, though? And even if there was a big difference, I'd rather take $1.17MM per year for 6 years than a $2MM lump sum payment which is around what he was offered last year IIRC. His lump sum signing bonus was worth ~2 years of his contract he got in Japan. I'd say he still wins regardless of how you choose to view it. And not to mention if someone drafted me in the 1st round out of high school and offered me 40% of my slot value, I'd tell them to kick rocks too.

It's not tax free. The US is one of the only first world countries that taxes ex-pats as though they were still in the country. If you work overseas, you pay whatever the local tax is and US income tax. It's about the only area where Americans are taxed more than our 1st world counterparts. (It's obviously different if you're not in a civilian job - e.g. military).

One additional benefit to many playing overseas is they are, many times, also provided free housing and living expenses as part of their contract in addition to their salaries. I know a lot of basketball players playing overseas are provided deals like this so I would think baseball could have similar deals as well.

Definitely. And Japan is baseball crazy so my guess is he will get the royal treatment both in terms of contract/compensation and in terms of wherever he goes he'll be a star.

Braves got a #9 in this year's draft plus their regular pick.
We'll be fine.

Hi
I honestly don't know.I just heard on a local sports talk show that he had to complete the 6 years to get paid...could be wrong.
Wasn't the Braves offer closer to 2.4 million?
