One of Alabama’s reserve quarterbacks is transferring.
Redshirt freshman Layne Hatcher is leaving the program and went into the transfer portal Monday, AL.com has learned.
A source confirmed that Hatcher plans to transfer to Arkansas State, as first reported by RedWolfReport.com. The Little Rock, Arkansas native had been committed to Arkansas State until accepting a late scholarship offer from Alabama last May.
Hatcher ended the spring fifth on the Crimson Tide’s quarterback depth chart. He was only in for one drive during Alabama’s spring game on Saturday and didn’t get in until the fourth quarter.

The Alabama version of LSU’s Our Lady of the Lake Foundation.

If I were fifth, fifth on the depth chart, I'd just stay put. It's not like he's the talented but edged out backup. He can't transfer to OU like Hurts did and immediately start with a good chance to make the playoffs. He's going to be fighting for PT at a G5 school.
Anyone who is #5 anywhere surely doesn't expect NFL chances. You're doing it for the fun and free degree at that point. I'd just stay there, gather an unearned NC ring or two to show off, brag that I played for Saban, and get my degree.

No one gives a shite about football. We're a basketball conference.

Did you just post something and then post a sarcastic remark to it in the same post?
If the post isn’t a big deal then don’t create it. No one cares where that guy ghow’s.

It wouldn’t be worth the grueling practices and workouts though to never see the field imo

Not really. He's the all time yardage leader in Arkansas HS history for yards and TD's. He took his shot at the SEC, and it didn't work out, but he is the kind of kid that is MADE to be a G5 starter in a fast offense.

The type who could go to Washington State and do good.

With Tua starting next year, Mac a sophomore and Tua'a little brother and Bear's great-grandson coming in as Freshman it was obvious quick that if he wanted a real shot it would be elsewhere.

Is this one of those weird flex thingies?

but you guys have 8 more 5* QBs willing to ride the bench for four years, so no real worry.

The kid is going home. No mystery here. Best of luck to him.

Good luck to the kid!!
He'll always be able to say that he was on the Alabama football team.

Arkansas State usually has a good team and they are in a conference that is fond of high scoring offenses. I say go there and enjoy himself for a couple of years. ASU is not nearly as highly regarded as Alabama when it comes to academics though. But if he wants to play then it would take a run of injuries on a Biblical scale for him to see the field at Bama.
