Hard to believe such a fire could happen to a place like that. You’d think there would be all kinds of safeguards.

From what I’ve read, no reason to believe this particular fire was intentional.

Renovations were ongoing—perhaps to improve fire safety, but not much can be done with such a large structure built during that time period. It was a completely wooden frame structure. There were no firewalls or other passive suppressants. Add to that the cathedral was huge and airy—no way to keep even a relatively small fire from becoming massive.

The problem is that France has experienced a spate of these things recently.

"France has seen a spate of attacks against Catholic churches since the start of the year, vandalism that has included arson and desecration. Vandals have smashed statues, knocked down tabernacles, scattered or destroyed the Eucharist and torn down crosses, sparking fears of a rise in anti-Catholic sentiment in the country."

I hope they don't link this to terrorism.

I’ve been in there. It is amazing how much wood is used in the interior. And it has been aging and drying for the better part of 1000 years. It was a perfect place for a fire. No matter how many safeguards.

History isn't gone. It happened. And it's just a building. It was just a building when man built it and it shows that it is still a building when it's destroyed.

Good reminder this week that the church has always been the body of believers and that Jesus lives before and after a building.

Honestly I think that it isn't the Muslims behind all these church burnings. It's people pissed off about the sex abuse stuff.

Recently Pope Francis called the people levying accusations against the church "allies of Satan." This after he, himself, has personally covered up sex abuse.

But people should recognize that building as something separate from the Church. It is a sacred site. A world heritage site for fricks sake. Harsh punishment is in order for any perps.

Didn't they already say that it started in an area where there was ongoing restoration work and that the cause was more than likely a result of something with that? I get that people are emotional about this and that there will be conspiracy theories, but it seems probable this was just a tragic accident.

See my first post in this thread. I linked an article talking about all the instances of this happening this year.

This is the 10th Catholic Church fire in France this week.
