Your reaction when Avery Johnson was hired

Proven guys like Donovan, Pitino, Matta are near locks to succeed.

Big names coaches have won Championships/Deep NCAA tourney runs in major conferences.
Schools like Alabama and Auburn can't just hire a big name basketball coach because they say they want to like they can in football

We'll see how it all pans out. But one thing is for certain, the Bama Administration will not string along a high priced Head Coach that produces a consistent mediocre product. You pay top 10-15 salary, you damn well expect to see a decent team take the court/field and produce a ranked team at the end of the season.
Maybe the third mid major in a row is the charm.

Of allllllll the shite I've posted on this website that could be dug up and laughed at, a 4 year old basketball thread in which the OP is nothing but quotes from other people is what you guys cling to.
That is fascinating to me.

Auburn did with Bruce Pearl.

Meh, he's not really a big name like Pitino or Donovan

My reaction to the Avery Johnson hire was appropriate for what it was - a major splash hire that the media and fans loved.
Of course, you wouldn't know anything about that because you likely had never even watched an entire basketball game until around 2 years ago.

Agreed, it's just funny because all of the talk was about finally getting a big name.
But when that Coach has had years to build and improve and he still finds a way to shite the bed in games and he turns out a consistently mediocre product while he's pulling good talent AND a top salary, it's time to cut him loose. The Bama Administration cut out the dead weight and took a chance with another mid-major, we'll see how it turns out.

Not as big of a name but he'd won conference championships and been to 4-5 Sweet 16's.
Easily a big name.

Don't shite the bed over UA's hiring of a good coach. He will get all the support he needs to help the program. They tried getting a "name" coach in response to AU hiring Pearl and it did not work out very well. I think this hire will do some good things for them.
Anyone as an AU fan shitting on the coach for being from Buffalo, remember our AD came from there.
Congrats UA. Good hire!

He doesn't have to be a charm, but he damn sure won't hang around on the payroll long if he can't put a better product on the court than his predecessor.

quote:I LOVE Pearl, but we all know AU had no competition for his services when Jay Jacobs sacked up and went after him. And I'm not exactly sure I'd put Pearl in the same "Big Time" as Pitino/Donovan until Pearl brings home a title.
Auburn did with Bruce Pearl.
Bruce has his shot though and his team is on a great run right now. He can cement his name with the greats of the sport with just 4 more wins.

I'm not knocking the hire. I think it's a total tossup whether he succeeds or not.
I'm knocking that you ended up with him after all of the talk of other huge names. (Pitino, Donovan, and Matta who had each been to the NCAA title)
