The death of the Old Barn as it was called. I use to put oil on the bottom of my shoes when I went there, because the floors were sticky all the time going up the ramps. I use to go there all the time back in the 70's as a young teenager to watch the ABA games with our Spirit of St. Louis basketball team. Marvin Barnes, Fly Williams and big Moses Malone.
Bob Costas was our play-by-play man.

I only remember the Blues played there a few years until Kiel Center was built. I wish today’s arenas had the character of the old places like that.

The character was the overhanging upper decks. Everyone could be a lot closer to the action.
Lots of great memories in there to be sure.

The Arena (I refuse to call it the Checkerdome, because Ralston Purina nearly let the Blues walk to Saskatoon. Thank God the NHL intervened when they did) and Chicago Stadium were two of the loudest venues in the NHL and probably all of sports.
Sigh. I miss the pre-Bettman NHL.

Didn’t other old arenas also have the overhanging upper decks? I really liked those. But what I loved about it was it looked like an old cathedral with steeples from the outside.
