What percentage chance do you give of Avery being fired?
On one hand, I think it’s likely, while on the other, I see Byrne giving him one more year to produce.
With the money we have available in our athletic department, we deserve a better basketball program than we’ve been getting.

What Bryant said. We’ve got the money but we aren’t spending it on basketball. Especially after we just paid a nice sized buyout to Grant

I was of the opinion that we should have went after Pearl instead of Avery in the first place

We do, but two factors going for Avery to be retained are his buyout and that he got us our first tournament win since 2006. Even though us as fans can see the team is underachieving, it would be pretty hard to convince a better coach to come here when you let go of the first coach to give you some success because of one bad year.
Someone said the Cavs maybe giving him a look, so that is a possibility.

Our AD ought to be putting out feelers to gauge what interest some top coaches would have in coming to Bama.
Avery is about a 6 out of 10. If Byrne can't secure at least an 8 out of 10, we should just hold on.
Avery is still learning the college game and it is possible, IMO, that he can ultimately figure this thing out and become a better coach.

Now this is a reasonable post. The guy is not an idiot. He can learn and improve. He may need to get a little harder, by that I mean instilling in players a fear of his wrath if they don't give effort and make good decisions, but as far as being sympathetic with their various challenges and struggles, he is good.

Boy that sounds a lot like the things that were said about Shula in 2006. Bama ain’t the place to learn your craft, not even in hoops. At this level you should have it figured out already. We should be able to get a well established college coach. Steve Prohm may not be Nick Saban but he ain’t Mike Shula or Avery Johnson either.
Byrne needs to have a private little meeting with Avery and tell him we appreciate what he’s done but we aren’t where we want to be as a program. I’d tell him that we aren’t at the point where we are ready to fire him but it doesn’t look like a long term relationship and I’d encourage him to be looking around to find a job that appeals to him. That would give both sides time to do their due diligence. If he refuses that deal, I’d tell him he’s on a short leash. The first time he has a disappointing year, including this one, we’d make a move.

I don't think Avery was hired for long term. He has no ties to the university so if he would of had success here he would have moved to a better job or back to NBA. Imo it was a short term plan that did boost the program way more than Grant did. He reached out to Battle to repair his coaching image because no NBA teams would give him a coaching job again. This combined with us just being rejected by GM. I personally think it's time to move on.

I've heard some rumblings that Byrne and Avery do not see eye to eye. Greg is tired of dealing with CAJ's inability to run a program. Little things keep showing up...also having to intervene and tell the wife to stop cussing out our own players from behind the bench is never a good thing...
My uncle is a booster for the bball program so that's where I've heard this. Of course it might be a little overblown but I believe most of it.

Mike Shula never made it to the Super Bowl as a head coach before becoming head coach at Alabama. Avery Johnson didn't just suddenly forget how to coach basketball.

Yeah, and this is where you see that, unlike perhaps coaching in the NBA, there's a lot more to running a college program than coaching. The coach's wife can't be doing that. Period.

lol I am very aware of our late season collapses. I like how the back half of our schedule lines up this year. As long as we can keep from losing to Georgia or Vandy at home I like our chances. Even our road games don't look super tough, @Vandy, @TAMU, @South Carolina, @Arkansas. We play LSU and Auburn at home too which is a big plus.

Avery was up 2 games to 0 in the finals and proceed to basically get beat by Dwayne Wade shooting pull up jumpers from the foul line for four games. The system still ran from the previous regime through Dirk and slowly collapsed as Avery had more impact.
