Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newtonand Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins both missed the playoffs, but they came in on opposite ends of the spectrum in an anonymous survey of 85 defensive players from 25 different teams conducted by The Athletic.

Newton received the most votes as the league's most underrated quarterback
, while Cousins topped the list of the most overrated ones.

Eli Manning was the runner-up as the most overrated signal-caller, although Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Tom Brady, Derek Carr, Andy Dalton, Dak Prescott, Jameis Winston and Sam Bradford all received multiple votes.

It is interesting that many players see Newton as the most underrated given his long list of accolades. He has been in the public eye since he won a Heisman Trophy and national title at Auburn in 2010 and parlayed his collegiate career into becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft.

Since then, he's won Offensive Rookie of the Year and a league MVP award, appeared in a Super Bowl, made three Pro Bowls and been the face of multiple commercials. While those accomplishments aren't typically associated with someone who's underrated, it is a testament to his talent that so many defensive players saw him as such.

It is perhaps a nod to the fact that he often isn't discussed in the same manner as Brady, Brees and Aaron Rodgers among the best signal-callers in the league. As well, defenders who have to tackle him at 6'5" and 245 pounds likely respect his ability to make plays while keeping Carolina's passing attack afloat.

LOL. They all have SB rings and will rank at or near the top in all time yardage, TDs, etc when they finish their career.
Now, there may some blowback against Cam because he's a douchebag.

Posting as a Saints fan only on this one:

Lol.

I mean he’s got an arm and is a big-bodied, shifty runner. Not sure he’s the most accurate passer ever, but he can still absolutely hurt you when he’s on one. For all the talent, though, his problem is inconsistency. He’s red hot or frozen ice water. So those surveyed are not wrong...sometimes.

He was also voted least likely to recover a fumble in a Super Bowl.

A Bleacher Report article on an anonymous player poll?

Cam should go buy some new capris pants and a matching parasol to celebrate

That is how it will be until the Panthers get rid of Rivera or start investing in the OL and WRs.

Purely on race. Black players will always list a white guy as over rated and a black guy as under rated.

Dan is the most overrated QB to ever play in the NFL. I always thought you guys would just kind of let him go once he left AU. Dude played for one season and it was a sleazy deal all together.

Considering there are 352 starting defensive players in the NFL 85 saying it is him, doesn't really say much ....besides less than 25% believe that he is underrated.

Newton very rarely if ever does the feet first, NFL qb,sissy slide. Newton will lower his shoulder to take on defenders and dive head first for extra yardage and first downs. I do respect him for that.

Yes I know about the Super Bowl muffed fumble recovery not withstanding.

He is so underrated that the Panthers started the year 6-2 and failed to make the playoffs.
