2018:
Alabama vs UCF
Clemson vs Michigan
Notre Dame vs Ohio State
Oklahoma vs Georgia

2017:
Clemson vs USC
Oklahoma vs Auburn
Georgia vs Wisconsin
Alabama vs Ohio State

2016:
Alabama vs Wisconsin
Clemson vs Oklahoma
Ohio State vs Michigan
Washington vs Penn State

2015:
Clemson vs Notre Dame
Alabama vs Ohio State
Michigan State vs Stanford
Oklahoma vs Iowa

2014:
Alabama vs Michigan State
Oregon vs Mississippi State
Florida State vs TCU
Ohio State vs Baylor

Representation by conference in 8-team format vs current totals:

ACC 6(5) - Net +1 appearance
Big 10 12(3) - Net +9 appearances
Big 12 6(3) - Net +3 appearances
Ind 2(1) - Net +1 appearances
Pac 12 4(2) - Net +2 appearances
SEC 9(6) - Net +3 appearances

That the Big 10 is spearheading the call for an 8-team playoff is hardly altruistic. They stand, by far, the most to gain. Ohio State would go from 2 appearances to 5. Michigan would go from no appearances to 2.

This presumes all other criteria remains unchanged.

When is the earliest possible year this thing can expand to 8 teams? 2026?

No homer but UCFast would’ve won the 4 team invitational last season. Not this season though.

Interesting take. I'd still be ok with expanding it to 8 and being done with it.

If the SEC continually had its conference champion left out the playoffs I would want the system changed too.

Quite frankly, you cant really call it a National Championship Playoff when you arent ensuring at least 1 representative from each conference. There arent enough big cross-conference games during the regular season to truly know

8's too much, I think 6 would be perfect.

The earliest it can expand supposedly is 2026 but people are mad at SEC favoritism and UCF not getting a shot (thanks Auburn ) so it's a possibility it expands to 8...and actually makes the possibility even higher than you see MOAR SEC teams unless they make it Power 5 conference championship based (which IF they did, they would also need to add in the rule of if you have more than 2 losses, you're disqualified).

I honestly like they way that looks on paper. A lot of high profile games and almost no really weak ones

An eight team ranking playoff is the best from a competition standpoint. Like someone else said, there are no bad games on that list.

The argument is going to be from the Pac 12.

2018: Pac 12 champion not in top 8. (Notre Dame and American Conference champion included though)
2017: All conference champions included.
2016: All conference champions included.
2015: All conference champions included
2014: All conference champions included.

If you gave the Power 5 auto bids, Washington would replace UCF in 2018. I think UCF with their QB is better than Washington.

2015 Alabama vs. Ohio State would've been very juicy.

That OSU team was stacked and was probably the only team that hasn't made the playoff that would've been a serious contender to win it.
