So, my older boy is off in his first year of college. Mrs. Zwin was just shopping for some Christmas presents he had said he was looking for, and tells me she got him a $160 gear shift knob for his GTI that he had been coveting. I said to myself, "Self," I said, "that is stupid money for something like that." Mrs. Zwin corrects me that Christmas presents should have some element of "Wouldn't spend my own money on that", so I let it go.

Then I hear he has a fundraiser set up on his FB page for his birthday today. Mrs. Zwin and I both cringe at the idea this is for a set of wheels or something.

Turns out, all he wants is to raise money for The Mercy Ship. He spent a gap year in Cameroon working on the ship, and wants to do something for them and the program.

It's a modest goal of $200, but still it's already past that and it still has 2-3 weeks to go.

This comes a few days after I learned that an older lady in the neighborhood knew him just because he would help her carry her groceries from the bus stop to her house.

These kids, I tell ya....

If you raise your kids right, they will be good people.
Sounds like you did not too bad

Nothing better than having a child that you can be proud of.

Had never heard of this so googled and researched more about this organization. What a great way to serve and help people. Sounds like you raised a good one.

He sounds like a wonderful young man.

Granted... we will have to detract points because if you had posted he was using his free time to fill up jizz jars and raise money for this very worthy charity it would have worked better.

Joking aside you raised a good one there. Character is what you are in the dark as they say. Meaning the little good things you do and little bad things you do are what defines you as a person. The little things he's done, and the big ones too, point to him being a great guy.

Never apologize for speaking public ally about raising and placing a person of good character in our society.

People need to be reminded that it does not happen by accident.

OK, wanna hear about how he got his Eagle Scout rank after having to work through 3 troops in 2 countries so we could fulfill a promise to his Eagle Scout grandfather (my dad) when he was dying?

How about the other boy who found out this week he got his Congressional nominations to both West Point and Annapolis?

Or that both of them work in the kids Sunday school classes at church?

Or...

Obnoxious, aren’t I? The anonymity of this place lets me feel freer to say this stuff. I worry less about being “that dad” like I would in real life.

My first child is due soon. I'm going to need you to write a book about child-rearing before then and give it to me, or at least provide some cliffs.

You've done a wonderful job.

You mean beatings and food deprivation don't work with today's children?

I'll have to speak to my parents about this.

I kid.

Step 1: Marry someone much, much better than you.

Step 2: Make sure she is the mother of your children

Step 3: Shut up and get out of her way.

I didn't think I needed a DNA test, but will reconsider. Is there something you know that I don't?

Except for a couple of minor disagreements, she and I see eye-to-eye on everything.

I'm sorry to shite on this, but fb is very insistent on you doing this. They start bothering you a day or 2 beforehand and continue through your bday.

Now this is actually commendable af.
