What ended up being the reason Mallett couldn't stay on the field in the NFL?

His numbers aren't great, so it's no surprise that even though he's been able to play meaningful snaps in the NFL, it never stuck no matter what team he was on. I didn't really watch him much in person, though. Is there someone who watched more of his pro games that could shed some light on what his issues were? He seemed like a can't miss prospect when he left us.

Obviously for the most part, he was behind an established starting QB (Brady, Flacco), and when he was in, surprisingly, he was scared to throw the ball down field. All he did was dink and dunk. Go look at his game logs... lots of 8/15, 56 yards type games, in preseason or in regular season.

Consistent accuracy on 15+ yard throws was a problem.

Could never really stretch a D (that's what she said) the way he did in college and thus was easy to defend.

Plus its the NFL, teams don't like a late, bitchy backup. Once you publicly shite the bed like he did in Houston, you're always going to have an uphill battle.

You're a smart dude though, I'm sure you knew all that.

All this got me to thinking that although we’ve had a number of quarterbacks land in the NFL, is the most “recent” truly successful NFL QB Joe Ferguson? If so damn that was a long time ago.

Ah, so basically NFL secondaries at him up when he got there and he lost his mojo. Also yeah the bugaboo in Houston wasn't great. Maybe just not quick enough upstairs?

His accuracy was never that good in the NFL, and like most petrino QBs he struggled reading nfl defenses.

Yes, unless we get partial credit for Tavaris Jackson.

Edit....I thought he was a little more productive in the NFL than he was. Joe was the last one.

Accuracy. Him in the NFL was a little like Cole Kelley here. Strong arm but bad decisions and accuracy did him in.

Ryan didn't get picked up in the AAF league QB draft yesterday, while AA got picked up by the Salt Lake Stallions.

He has picked up some good money holding a clip board for some years.

I really don't think his INT numbers were BAD per say. I see 10 career INTs on 345 attempts with 9 TDs. Fitzpatrick for example has nearly double his INT %.

He was just overall ineffective. Kind of like watching Josh Rosen right now.

Lot's of throwaways/incompletions.

Petrino always said he was great picking up an offense but hard to say surrounded by all those weapons and Petrino's scheme.

He never really had any of that anywhere he landed but he impressed the Pats enough to get drafted so go figure.

Hard to say but more than likely a lot of stupidity and immaturity. You can be an a-hole in the NFL but you've gotta be good. He was missing the latter part for sure and thus became easily expendable. If you're a 2nd string QB you pretty much HAVE to be a locker room guy. He proved himself to be the opposite of that.

Because he sucked.

Ravens defenders last summer were openly mocking how terrible he was at playing QB, during camp.

Touch. It was all about touch. Mallett was the starter in Houston for 3 or 4 games. People were CLAMORING for him to start over Bryan Hoyer from the second we traded for him. Anyone who knew football knew talent wise he was a 1st rounder but had a drug problem. That's why the Pats drafted him in the 3rd round, cause they thought that highly of him. We gave him a chance to start and he did mediocre purely because the balls kept bouncing off the recievers hands. He would throw dimes into such tight windows that it would make you go "god damn is there anyone in the NFL with that kind of arm strength?"......and then the ball would bounce off the receivers hand for a pick. He could throw the football into any window, he actually had a great deep ball in Houston but our WRs/RBs/TEs could not catch his bullets and most of his INTs in Houston came from tip balls. It was looking like he would be benched due to these touch issues but he kept starting. Then he misses a flight and we cut him. His NFL career was basically over after that. Everyone in Houston wanted him to do well. We really, really thought this kid had the talent to start and O'Brien could fix his touch issues. Unfortunately he's a knuckle head and messed up a good thing he had going with the Texans. All he had to do was exist and he was a better QB than Bryan Hoyer..........but then he didn't show up for the team flight on time. It was sad. I was sad.

I remember one game he came out for one play because he took a hard hit or something and Hoyer came in and Mallett never played after that

Yup he missed the flight the next week and was then cut. We had a carousel going at QB that season and he definitley would have stayed in the mix.

Worked out well for the Texans in the end drafting Watson. He’s the real deal
