I don't see how Auburn cannot fire Malzahn at this point

The damage has been done. What recruit in their right mind would want to go play for a coach that is all but guaranteed to be fired a year later? Opposing coaches would pick off every 4 and 5 star commitment with ease.
I think he will be gone within two weeks.

Making a coaching decision based on one
recuiting class is really short sited. Plus it is not like we have many 4 stars to pick off. We certainly don't have any committed at positions of need (rb, ol, dt, de)

One horrible class sets back the next staff.

It's not just one recruiting class, it's also next years. Auburn is essentially agreeing to give themselves NCAA probation level sanctions if they do not fire Malzahn.
These next two classes would be completely butchered.

Yep, and make it two when Gus is responsible for the 2020 class as well. No one will come knowing he's getting fired in a few months.

It's not like Auburn hasn't done this before. 'Member #JetGate in 2003? Hell this may be sign Gus is going lead y'all to an undefeated season next year.

You're right. It's more than that

I kind of understand that AU was concerned that Arkansas would poach Gus after the UGA and Bama games and felt like they needed to give him a raise to keep him. But realistically, what were the chances the Pigs could get him? 20-30%?
I didn’t understand AU’s rationale for the raise last year and certainly don’t understand why he has to go now, less than a year after that raise. It looks like AU has no plan for the program, just shoot from the hip with their actions and see what happens.

A bad hire sets it back a lot further

It sounds like Auburn has some kind of leverage over Malzahn and is forcing him to take a reduced buyout in exchange for one more year's salary. That way he leaves in one year and all the dirt stays hidden. Not sure what that would be, but I can't understand why any head coach would agree to give up his freedom to fire assistants and accept a reduced guarantee on his contract.

Isnt this basically the same scenario LSU went through with Les Miles? He was going to be fired but ...the optics of a school with budget issues paying a guy millions to leave (yes..I know school budgets are distinct from athletic) was such that they kept him. That basically said to everyone, including 18 yr olds, " we are delaying firing until a more convenient time"

It's what happens when you don't have an AD and your new out-of-town president starts calling the shots with no pulse on the football environment in that state.

So it would be par for the course over the last few years. There was one class where Gus signed 1 OL and he got cancer and didnt enroll.

There has to be a highly rated QB out there itching to perfect that fake pass after a handoff that Stidham so eloquently perfected.

Morons were convinced by Jimmy Sextom that Gus was leaving, so we had to pay "market rate" to keep him. Thus market rate morons of the Auburn board were born.

You didn't see him call a 4th down pass to his punter during the Iron Bowl? Or getting 19 rushing yards vs the Faggies?

That was to the kicker, who promptly got flattened because all the OL were 40 yards away near the sidelines picking their noses.

Dooley did this once. OL has been awful for years.

Gus is going to have to mine the JUCO ranks like his hairs on fire to fill holes in that oline and the big defensive players AU loses this year.
