To me, that's gotta be the most astounding achievement in sport. Y'all that's 26.2 miles!!...running at 13 miles per hour.

Wowza
Were they from Kenya?
Were they from Kenya?

Unless my math is incorrect, that's a 4 min and roughly 38 second/mile pace.
That is insane.
That is insane.

As someone who used to run long distances I find that to be amazing. After a certain distance the endorphins take over and the pain goes away. For me it was after about eight miles. That guy will be on a runner's high for a while.

You have to wonder if the climate played a role. Was it moderate temperatures with a lowish humidity that helped them keep the pace? Its still an amazing feat.
However, for the record, I am proud that most days I can do a mile in just 2 hours and 30 seconds. I'm working my way up to the marathon distance.

Your dog is not impressed
Your lab can do about 14 mph but that includes stopping to roll in smelly stuff and stopping often for petting breaks. Mine also stops dead for a good 5 mins while you rub her belly.
An average dog hits about 19 mph
Many dogs exceed 35 mph
Greyhounds average 45 mph

How many of'em can do it for over 26 miles?

I think Rhodesian ridgebacks can

I am guessing big hunting dogs tracking big game. Hell, I have a coonhound that puts his nose to the ground and does not lift it for 3 to 4 hours. Not sure how much ground he covers but it wears me out just watching him work. Very lean and young so if I don't run him at least 2 hours every day he destroys the house.

I have a Boston terrier that gets tired after about 3 miles of walking

It's not impressive that he ran 13 miles an hour. It's impressive that he did it for 26 freaking miles. Have you ever heard the saying, "It's a marathon not a sprint"? If you want top end speed for short distance go look at a sprint.

I really find that hard to imagine.

You do know the original guy that did the marathon dropped dead after running it.
I worked horses as a kid, I clearly understand distance and speed.
Quarter horse = speed over sort distance
Thoroughbred = speed over distance
Hunter / Jumper = speed over great distance
(steeplechase originally meant church steeple in one town to church steeple in another town.)

I would wager that 95% of America could not run a mere 200 meters next to Kipchoge and stay with him at 34.5 sec 200 pace.
Think about this...he can back down to a...4:45 pace and carry on a conversation. I highly recommend going to see a world class race. The effortless speed is impressive. If you get a chance to see a world class 1500/mile...something in the 3:50/under class, youll intially wonder if they forgot that they have 4 laps to do
