and leaving it up to each school and coach?
PED's I understand and fully support those bans, but weed is not a PED. If anything, I think it hurts performance.
Not advocating schools allowing players to have it on campus or go to games/practice under the influence, but I think it's ridiculous to suspend a player for testing positive for weed by the NCAA when their concern should be PEDs.

No. Weed is illegal. When it is legal ok. Fine. I don't have a problem with weed. I don't smoke it and don't plan to but it is currently illegal in most states by law.
If we are having to lobby the NCAA to make an illegal drug ok for players just so our guys don't get suspended then we have a bigger problem.
Rules are rules, whether we agree or not. Follow the rules or suffer the consequences. I think the tax laws in this country are bullshite. However, try to get around the system and you will find your arse in prison. I think telling a colleague that this new Apple whatever is gonna hit the market in 6 months is a bullshite "insider trading" law because it boosts the economy and everybody at Apple knows the information anyway. A father who works at Apple tells his son of the newest gadget over family dinner has committed a crime. HOWEVER, it's illegal and rules are rules.
You're coming from the Fulton case which is in black and white what happens to you if you try to cheat a test. It's two years. period. End of story. If you don't like the rule, petition the NCAA but blame the correct people. LSU fans believe it was a conspiracy created by Alabama to keep the kid off the field. Nope, Alabama had nothing to do with the 2 year stipulation that was written in and couldn't care less whether the kid played or not. LSU got a break here that now will have opened pandora's box. When Bama has a guy try to cheat one, I fully expect LSU to be firmly behind us in petitioning a "reduced" sentence regardless of what the rule says.

I can think of few topics on which I genuinely have no opinion one way or the other.
But this one falls into that category.
If pushed to offer a viewpoint, mine would be to let the universities/scholarship funding source decide.

So what about players in Colorado or other States where it is legal, or decriminalized? The spirit of the NCAA regulation is banning PEDs because it gives users a competitive advantage, it's not about punishing people for the legal implications of using substances. If that were the case, you'd have the NCAA coming down hard on underage drinking by players.

Actually, Fulton wasn't on my mind when asking this. I posted it because there are players every year who test positive for marijuana and get banned by the NCAA, not just at LSU. Nice try, but it's a swing and miss for you.

I thought most weed suspensions were based on university policies not NCAA. I may be wrong but I thought the NCAA rarely tests for recreational drugs.

I would fall back on this as well. With many jurisdictions moving toward legalizing or decriminalizing, and the absence of performance enhancing impacts, I feel the NCAA should lift the ban and let each school decide how they handle positive marijuana tests.

Your lack of knowledge on the subject on marijuana astonishes me and is the reason while it’s hard for good hardworking people to have it. A beer is no better than a joint. Hypocrisy is in the air I smell.
