Did Bama Make the Best Strategic Coaching Hire of the Off-Season?

Their biggest obstacle in the West this year is in Starkville and there is a new coach with a new and unfamiliar offensive philosophy. Bama goes out and hires the WR coach/passing game coordinator from PSU who obviously has an in depth understanding of that coach and the new offense. A great move in my opinion and reminds me of back when a handsome young whipper snapper with a keen eye for talented football players and the ladies took the college football world by storm over in Oxford. Bama brought in Tyler Siskey to counter.

Should be a fun matchup the second week of November. Also, always look forward to the salute to veterans at the MSU/Bama games.

Josh Gattis begins his first season in Tuscaloosa after joining head coach Nick Saban's coaching staff in January of 2018 to serve as the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Gattis brings eight years of experience to Alabama, spending six of those seasons working under James Franklin. The last four seasons, Gattis has served as the wide receivers and passing game coordinator along with leading the offensive recruiting efforts for Penn State. During his time in Happy Valley, Gattis helped the Nittany Lions secure four consecutive top-25 recruiting classes, including a pair of top-15 classes in two of the last three seasons. He was selected by Scout.com as the 2015 Big Ten Recruiter of the Year.

The Crimson Tide tossed a shutout on Saturday night, topping the Rebels 25-0 and limiting the normally potent Rebel offense to just 205 total yards. How'd they do it? Former Rebel coordinator of recruiting development Tyler Siskey played a part. Siskey joined Alabama's support staff as the associate director of player personnel this offseason, but he was featured prominently on ESPN's broadcast in the Alabama coaches' booth with binoculars during a critical fourth-down play early in the fourth quarter.

He (Siskey) didn’t really assist in the game plan," Saban said according to CoachingSearch.com. "He wasn’t on the head set. He didn’t talk to anybody during the game. I don’t know if there’s any rule that says he can’t go in the press box and watch the game. He wasn’t in any different position than he’s ever been in any game."

The NCAA rule on coaches limits a program to nine on-the-field assistants, but several SEC programs—including Alabama—have beefed up their off-the-field staff lately. While graduate assistants and strength and conditioning head coaches are subject to exceptions, Bylaw 11.7.2.1 limits the coaching impact of that staff: No individual other than coaches designated to fill the coaching categories set forth in Bylaw 11.7.2 may participate in any manner in the coaching of the intercollegiate team of a member institution during any football game, practice or other organized activity

I’m not criticizing Saban for doing it but he lied his arse of about that Siskey “wasn’t on a headset” but damn come on he’s sitting next to guys in headsets telling them the play that is coming.

Game is in T-Town. State doesn't win in T-Town.

Don't you guys still have Fitzgerald at qb? He's as bad as Hurts in the passing game.

Hardly an obstacle when Mississippi State has a linebacker for a QB.
