Starting in 2004 because that was Miami's first year in the ACC marking the end of the Big East as a power conference. I gave each of the P5 conferences an automatic bid and included the next 3 highest ranked teams in the last AP poll before the bowls or the last playoff poll. I used the AP poll instead of the BCS rankings because like the playoff committee, it's done entirely by humans. Out of 14 times this is how many times each team would've appeared.

Ohio State - 10 (11 appearances without probation in 2012)
Alabama - 9
Oklahoma - 8
USC - 6 (7 appearances without probation in 2011)
Oregon - 6
Wisconsin, Stanford - 5
Auburn, Virginia Tech, Texas, Florida State, Florida, Clemson - 4
Penn State, Georgia, Notre Dame, LSU, TCU, Michigan State - 3
Iowa, Utah, Michigan, Baylor - 2
Cal, Wake Forest, Louisville, Missouri, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Kansas State, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Washington - 1

Several issues to note with this system

1) Playing in the conference title game becomes detrimental - I know Alabama has gotten in twice and Ohio State once without playing in a conference title, but that's only 3 total times. Under an eight team system, teams that don't play in their conference title game get in every season. Oftentimes both participants in conference title games make the playoff as well.

2) Ohio State, Alabama, and Oklahoma all would've made it over 50% of the time. USC would've been right at 50% if they had been eligible in 2011. Ohio State seems to be the biggest problem as they would've only missed the playoffs 3 times if not for probation in 2012 under this format.

3) G5 teams are still rarely included. Cincinnati is the only current G5 team that would've made it, and they were in a BCS conference at the time. UCF finished the 2013 regular season ranked 15th and 2017 ranked 12th. Even Boise State would've never made it. Without some sort of guarantee an undefeated G5 team gets the eighth spot, they probably aren't getting in.

If you expand to 8, you could make a provision that any undefeated team is automatically awarded a berth.

EDIT: I'm not all together against undefeated being one of the first qualifiers in the current system either. On the blue moon season we have more than 4 undefeated teams we'll do the prestige dance the the G5 team will be left in the lurch, but 9 out of 10 years it means no unbeaten team is denied the opportunity to get their brains beaten by #1 in or maybe, just maybe, do something we'd talk about till we're playing shuffle board

Yes

Classic team. They probably would've been the eight seed despite being an automatic qualifier and played Ohio State in the first round.

I would prefer the 8th spot always be taken by a G5 team. It's not like the eighth best P5 team is ever that impressive resume wise. It would also prevent a conference from getting four teams in like the B1G would have in 2016 - Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

UGA should have more than 3 appearances.

In 04 we were #7 heading into the bowls
In 05 we were SEC champs.
In 07 we were #2 or 3 in the nation heading into the bowls
In 12 we were #3 heading into the bowls
In 17 we were SEC champs.

In '12 Georgia was #5 in the AP poll, behind at-large Notre Dame, Oregon, and Florida. The other 5 spots are filled by conference champions. Georgia deserved to go that year, but under this system, that most pro expansion college football fans promote, they wouldn't have made it. They didn't even make a BCS game.

In '04 I think you're right that UGA was 7th, but again there are only 3 at-large births. Cal, Utah, and Texas were all ranked higher and not P5 conference champions.

I mean...we have nothing to thump our chests about this year. Our schedule looks like this:

vs. Louisville (8-5 in 2017)
vs. Arkansas State (7-5)
@ Ole Miss (6-6)
vs. Texas A&M (7-6)
vs. Louisiana-Lafayette (5-7)
@ Arkansas (4-8)
vs. Missouri (7-6)
@ Tennessee (4-8)
@ LSU (9-4)
vs. Mississippi State (9-4)
vs. The Citadel (5-6)
vs. Auburn (10-4)

I wish this were the real playoff format.... with the 1st round games being held on campus sites.

The Conference Champions should automatically receive the Seeds 1-5, therefore the Conference Championship Games would still always have major implications: They'd almost always guarantee home-field advantage in the playoff, except for whichever one conference champ was the weakest.

If you don't win your conference, you can still get in as an at-large, but you have to play on the road in Round 1, plus you get the tougher seeding.

This would be great for the sport, IMO.

When would you play the round 1 games? I think I'd rather have a bye and play on the road round 1 than have to play a conference championship followed immediately by a tough playoff opponent. There'd have to be a break, but the longer the wait the more you get into freezing weather up North and students' Christmas break.

I'd line it up like this if it were in place this year:

December 1- Conference Championship Games
December 2- Playoff Field Announced

December 15- ROUND 1 PLAYOFF GAMES held on campus sites
11:00 CT- #5 at #4
2:30 CT- #6 at #3
5:00 CT- #7 at #2
7:00 CT- #8 at #1

January 1 (Tuesday)- Semi-final Games

January 14 (Monday)- Championship Game

I hope it never gets to 8 teams. 6 is the max I would do. I think 4 is ideal with 4 super conferences.

So how will you get to 4 super conferences?

I agree this would work, because if you only had 4 super conferences, the Conference Championship Games would essentially act as Round 1 Playoff Games
