Who were your original cross-division annual opponents?

I am losing my feel for how things were up until the early 2000s.
Arkansas used to play Tennessee and South Carolina annually. After around 2003 it became just South Carolina. Now it is just Mizzou.
Who were your teams original two cross-division permanents?

We had Kentucky and South Carolina.
South Carolina is actually one of our permanent rivals in basketball now so it's like we're back in the 90's again.
I don't understand why your permeant rival in football doesn't carry over for basketball. Like if we're playing Kentucky every year in football, shouldn't we play them twice in basketball? Same for Alabama. Why don't they play Tennessee twice? Just doesn't make any sense.

LSU had Kentucky and Florida. It kind of blows my mind we ever had a time where we had TWO permanent opponents. I think the Pac 12 has a weird scheduling quirk where the California schools always play each other every year and rotate differently with the cross divisional games because of it. Also I'm pretty sure the Big 10 has no permanent cross divisional opponents except for Purdue and Indiana. So their schedule rotates slightly differently.

Auburn and LSU. SEC went to only 1 for some stupid reason after the 02 season.

Was that stupid reason so that more teams could play each other? Sort of like what we should do now by going to 9 games?
ETA: I like playing Florida every year FWIW

Mississippi State and Arkansas
Mississippi State was our first conference win in the SEC.

I like playing LSU too. Auburn was our most played opponent at the time though and is the closest SEC school to us yet we only play each other every 8 years now.

Florida was the first SEC school to agree to play in Auburn in 1912, many decades before other SEC schools would play in Auburn. Florida was also our most played school behind UGA and just as big of a rival as UGA up until 2002.

eta math wrong

Problem with 9 is you are going to have a disproportionate amount of home games vs someone else. Schools already bitch about this with the few times it happens, now its going to be half the teams

South Carolina.
Big 12 did a better job of getting 2 opposite division opponents on the schedule each year. Every 3 year player got the play every team in conference at least once.

It never made sense to me why they pitted the two Universities who are the farthest from each in the conference against each other.

There were some classic Florida v Auburn games back then, wish they played more often

It's my favorite SEC series. I hate that it ended. Maybe one day Auburn will move to the East where we can reignite that series.
