When I was a little shite and he and Bobby Franklin were splitting time at QB, he would always take a minute to speak to me on the field after games.He'd smile and say " You're that kid from the Delta."

This is shocking, just heard this! I had no idea he'd had a stroke. This is sad news, I kinda liked Brewer. RIP

He was a character! I saw him at Taylor Grocery one time. My band was playing and when we took a break, I walked by his table and said, "Coach. I've always been on your team." (This was in reference to one of those stickers folks used to have that said, "I'm on Billy's team" in support of him.) He looked up as soon as he heard me say it and winked at me. He was the coach I knew as a kid when I first became a fan of Ole Miss, which for many of us as fans of our various teams, the coach of your school, when you first became a fan, will always hold a special place. That moment is one I will always remember.

I was on the sidelines for the LSU game back in 2009.
It was electric as hell minutes before kickoff. He was standing next to me and I turned and told him “damn I love when we play LSU”. His reply was just “this is my favorite day of the year” and gave me a wink.
He’s definitely walking with chucky tonight.

Him and Jackie were so perfect as rivals and both were extremely charismatic and endured by our respective fan bases. I would wager you would like Brewer even more if you met him in person. I got to meet Jackie at a Bonnie Bishop show in Jackson one time at Hal&Mals. Bonnie is a great great musician and step daughter (now adopted daughter) of Jackie. My drummer was playing in her band so I went to see it. I found myself behind enemy lines. Jackie was there. Former players of his were there. Maroon everywhere! But I got to really talk to Jackie a good bit and by God I ended up coming away a big fan of his after hating him as a fan. You couldn't help but like him in person aside from the BS of fandome. Got pics posing with him, Bonnie signed record, (and she's hot), had a blast, and won the party because I was the only rebel there and that's what we do. Bottom line, these coaches are people and they are where, or have been where they are, because they are special people, legendary people, that leave a mark, and are not forgotten.

Yep, both coaches represented the previous era of college football, which I grew up in as well. It's just hard to believe how so much time has passed since then. Brewer won every Eggbowl I attended at Memorial Stadium, with the exception of '87. Lots of memories from that time.

The NCAA just handed down a harsh decision because of what Brewer did 30 fricking years ago.

RIP. My family sure did -- and does -- love them some Billy Brewer. More than Vaught himself, in fact, because Billy was a true Ole Miss man through and through. I'm more of a Cutcliffe fan, myself, and they accept that...just so long as I don't go trying to compare the two. They'd consider that just plain disrespectful to Billy.

Billy Brewer was simply a legend. Growing up in the early 90s, he was the first head coach I ever knew. He was a huge Ole Miss Rebel, and I hate that the University did him wrong for so long. If you thought the rivalry between Mullen and Freeze was heated, the Brewer vs. Sherrill era was so much more intense.
The guy was also probably the all-time best sideline dresser. The Game hats, red pants, Billy Dog was fratty.
