New rule change means JF1 will be more likely to be red shirted.

More likely? Maybe.

Barring injury, this pretty much all but guarantees JF1 will be red shirted.

This, I disagree with. I think he gets in quite a few games for a couple of series.

I was really kinda trolling with that second part since the topic was already beaten to death in this thread. However, there is no real reason to play him a couple series in each game. He can basically play the whole game against Austin Peay and UMass and get way more snaps than a couple series each game. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Stetson leaving changes my original tune a little bit. Without him, JMFF will need to be ready to go every single game which means plenty of reps in probably more than 4 games.

It's impossible to know how much Fields will be needed. Fromm is a terrific QB but anyone can come down sick or have a miserable time against a particular defense.

I think that Fields plays part of every game. Fromm will be forced to play well if he wants to keep his job.

With Stetson Bennett gone I don't think he will be red shorting but I don't think he will play in every game either. If he plays every game that means we are probably beating up on all of our opponents pretty good. I just can't see playing him on the road in Baton Rouge unless the game is pretty much in hand. I hope you are right.

Curious about the assertion somewhere earlier in this thread that Fromm's arm is weaker than Murray's and not strong enough for the NFL.

I haven't seen evidence of that but then again...I'm not quarterback coach or evaluator of NFL talent.

Where does this idea come from? If anything, my impression has been that Fromm is a bigger, stronger version of Murray - including a stronger arm. We've not asked Fromm to throw tons of bombs but he seems to be able to get the ball anywhere on the field.

And at what point is the arm strength issue moot? Even for the NFL, would ability to throw the ball 90 yards be meaningful without accuracy, ability to run a complex offense, and so on?

I agree with the notion that Fields will add the running dimension to the position but I don't see arm strength as a deficiency with Fromm. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

Technically, JF11 is bigger than AM11. He's got about 1 inch and 10 pounds on AM11. AM11 was a great college QB. The point I was trying to make is that JF11 doesn't have some unique set of measurables or the prototypical NFL QB that makes him a great candidate to declare early.

As far as the arm strength, he just doesn't seem to, zip the ball around like Murray did. His passes sometimes seem to float to the receiver. I have no proof, just my observation.

Kirby when asked about redshirting Fields:
quote:

“I don’t see that happening,” Smart said. “I can’t say never because I don’t know what’s going to happen, but that’s certainly not in our plans.”

Instead, Fields will compete with starter Jake Fromm for the starting job and prepare to play in some capacity this fall.

Smart said the new redshirt rule, which allows a player to compete in four games and still be able to redshirt, won’t come into play.

“I think you guys are making way too big a deal about this redshirt thing and here’s why – I don’t really have a philosophy, the guy can either play or he can’t.

I think ya’ll think we sit around the table and got we should wait and hold this guy for four years,” Smart said. “These kids today, they can either play or they can’t. You want to develop and you want to grow them, but by their fourth year they’re either ready to leave, graduating, getting out of there or they’re possibly transferring. If they can help your team now, you play them now.”

That apparently includes Fields, the former five-star who has made a big impression since coming to school in January as an early enrollee.

“You don’t sit back and say he’s going to be better his fifth year if he redshirts,” Smart said. ”Think about redshirt seniors and tell me how many redshirt seniors have been effective, played a lot and played major roles on teams. They really don’t.”

“It’s not like back when you had Knowshon Moreno, he didn’t play, redshirted and was gone,” Smart said. “Well, you should have played him. You didn’t get as many years out of him anyway, so we’re really not making as big a deal out of it. We’re going to do game by game which gives us the best chance to win.”

Poor Rig. There was no chance he was ever going to be redshirted

We only had one QB transfer when I made the prediction, now we've had TWO qb transfers this offseason, which changes everything, you fricking gimps. Read the thread, you'll see where I changed my prediction as soon as Bennett left.

Kirby is right, with only two scholly qb's you can't redshirt. This is obvious.

fricking morons here. Jesus.

I'm sure the plan to play or redshirt a 5* QB hinged solely on if our white walkon scout team QB was getting reps in practice or not.

Not solely, I never said solely, interesting tricky little gimp way of trying to sneak that in though. Also mentioning that QB is white, like that's something bad. We're talking QB, not RB or WR or LB.

You could have had Fields in a backup position and still get a redshirt if only playing in four games by season's end. That's if you have a 3rd decent option at QB as a backup for handing the ball off to Herrien in garbage time, or coming in for a play during an equipment malfunction..But now we don't have that third option. It really does change everything.

If you don't understand that, I can't help you.

It’s ok to be wrong man. What’s not ok is moving the goalposts. He was never going to redshirt. The end

Nice, that's the one deep pass he didn't float to the receiver and under throw. Hopefully he has more like that in him.
