Someone tell me about how great Wong is that we've sunk 6 seasons into him

Wong? How bout DeJong?
Team has been on the downward trend for 3 years with zero superstar talent.

I don't think things are gonna change as long as they get 3+ million people show up year in and year out regardless of the product on the field.

DeJong is fairly young and can hit the long ball.
I just dont know why we've hung onto Wong for so long

Cards were willing to pay Stanton this year but he didn’t want to play in St. Louis.
It’s not easy to get superstars to sign in St Louis. In the last 40 years the Cardinals have had two superstar players Pujols and McGwire.
In the past they have traded for Rolen, Edmonds, and Holliday they were all really good players, but not superstars.
Yadi, Ozzie, Rolen, Edmonds were all superstar defensive players.
In the past 36 years the Cardinals have played in 7 World Series and won 3. Yankee’s are the only team to win more and they had multiple superstars.
It is unbelievable to win 3 World Series without having multiple superstars at the same time.

Edmonds and Rolen were certainly superstars in their prime. They didn’t call Rolen, Pujols, and Jimmyballgame the MV3 for nothing. Best 2-4 hitters in baseball for several years.
We had Larry Walker. The Big Puma. Beltran. Yes. Older. But still dangerously veteran hitters. And borderline HoFs.
Chris Carpenter was a superstar pitcher when healthy.
Team just doesn’t have an elite talent anymore anywhere on the diamond. And that’s excacerbated by a fundamentally poor collection of players.

I'm just glad we finally got the 2018 Cardinals thread going

They don't need a ton of superstars. What they're missing is that cornerstone player. It was McGwire and then it was Pujols. Tried to make it Holiday but that didn't pan out. Tried to get Stanton but that didn't work out.
Just need to find the one cornerstone player and then build around him with very good players whether youngsters like Freese or in their prime players like Rolen and Edmonds or aging veterans like Walker and Beltran.
Problem we have is we have Rolen (Ozuna in this case) and Freeze (DeJong) but we don't have the cornerstone player.

I actually like the ceiling of this team. We have the pieces to be good, im just not sure the pieces will be used correctly.
in 2 months the SP needs to be: Cmart-weaver-Reyes-flahrety-lizard. Thats a good looking starting 5. At that point Holland should be 100% back to form. Waino needs to be in the pen, love the guy but we need skill not just a "cardinal great". When everyone starts clicking, I think our outfield unit will be top 3 in baseball. The teams struggle in for sure going to be infield. Other than Dejong, I dont care much for anyone but a little bit of jose/carp. I think Wong and Jed are bench quality players, and munoz is in over his head. Need to trade for a 3rd baseman if we want to see october.
My prediction as of now, 88 wins, wildcard spot.

I don't think you're wrong about DeJong or Wong. Saying so long to Wong could be a pleasing song to which the throng of lifelong fans could sing along. But I could be wrong -- I've been hitting the bong, watching Cheech and Chong all day long.

First off, they need to get rid of Matheny.
This first week and a half has been an extension of what we’ve seen over the last two seasons.
I realize that’s a pipe dream.
Hopefully Holland can get some work and be solid by Memorial Day. Between now and then MM will wear out guys like Bowman and Leone.
Gyrko needs to get back. He’s a nice constant for this team. Marp needs to hit lead off. Fowler 5th, Martinez 3rd until he’s back.
The pitching is ok. Waino is gonna hold back Flaherty, but he’ll be back up. We’ll get Reyes in the pen at some point.
Bottom line, this team has to hit. The pitching will keep them in games, but the longer we’re forced to watch MM keep going to the grinder, the worse it’s going to get if they can’t score late.

Signing DeJong was a dumb move, let’s see him produce after a couple of seasons.
It was obvious that move was a panic move, just “in case” he turns out to be good.
Right now he’s got the same issues as every other young hitter they’ve brought up.
Completely unable to recognize offspeed counts. Unable to lay off sliders and breakers out of the zone.
Only Carp has been able to compartmentalize this stuff, and he’s on the other end of the spectrum. Just takes too many fastballs.
I think there’s a fundamental flaw in how the organization teaches hitting behind in the count, and it shows in guys like Wong, DeJong, Grichuk.

Right.
IF.
I like his approach, and I think this season will be when we know for sure. He’ll have to make adjustments.
That’s the mark of a major league hitter. Gotta adjust. They will find your holes, and everyone has them. Even Pujols did. He was just smart enough to recognize the pitches to hit, AND capitalize on mistakes.
I’d just like these guys to be able to recognize the pitches to hit.

Like many of the 80’s team we are not a power hitting team. Some players have occasional power. What would make this team better is playing more like a Whitey ball team.
Fowler, Pham, Dejong, and Wong have speed and should bunt more. Carp should bunt against the shift. The more we bunt the more the infield will open up. This will allow more base runners and hits. This will also change how the pitchers pitch.

I’ve had about enough of Wacha as a SP.

Yep. I’d like to see him in a relief role.
I think we’re stuck with him as a starter though. If Reyes was here, he’d be in the pen.
He’s a FA after this season, no?

Wacha was a really good pitcher until he started to have shoulder problems in 15 then again 16. He is not the same pitcher he was in 13 and 14.
Shoulder problems can be hard to come back from. Sometimes it is a mental thing that can have a small change in the delivery or the release point.
There is definitely a change and it could help him to move to the bullpen.

How about former Cardinal Joe Kelly giving Tyler Austin 98 MPH in the ribs and then inviting him out to the bump to talk about it. shite was awesome.

Loved it and it looked like he got the best of Austin.
