quote:Not really. Hinduism is the only older major religion, and if you research it you'll find great similarities in it and Judaism, which is the foundation for Christianity. Islam is closely tied to Judaism, also.
There’s far more to all the other mainstream religions than there is Christianity.
Most are far older.
Actually the 3 have "ironically" many thing in common.

I think it’s that simple. People tend to adopt what’s convenient, familiar, and will meet the approval of their peers. That goes for everything from clothing styles to religion.
I do think that people do what you are describing, but that does not make it right or true. Just as many scientists disagree on subjects, religions disagree on things. But they all can't be right because they are so contradictory. For instance, there are many theories of evolution or even of how the universe was created in science. But they all can't be right, can they? But one has to be right. I mean, we know the Universe is here, so it came into being somehow. Just because they don't all agree doesn't mean they are all wrong.

Being older doesn't necessarily mean something is right. Fir instance. I am 61 and my wife will tell you in a heartbeat I am wrong about all kinds of things!
*She's wrong, though. I really am right!*

The purpose of prayer isn't to "prove" anything.

Its purpose is to what then, hope?
Hoping something happens is wasting time and energy on what you can not control.
Get that shite out of here

How can you say it's man's greatest power without knowing it's actual power?

This is just selfish as hell. What you think is true doesn’t mean someone else finds the same “belief” in truth. That’s the problem with religion: it’s very close minded.

Are you saying that there is more than one truth?

You would call something a coincidence or luck or explain things away in some way. We might point and say power of prayer. It's always funny how people will ascribe some things to luck while also requiring scientific back up on other things.
Hey, look. I'll talk about this all day long if you guys want. But I will have my faith and believe what I believe, and you will, most likely go on not believing.
If you are truly interested in knowing more I will stick around and talk, but if you just want to "prove me wrong" or convince me what I believe is fallacy we are wasting our time. It's totally up to you....but I will say, that i appreciate you guys discussing this with respect.

What I’m saying is I don’t believe in organized religion. I believe in facts. A religious truth based on a judgmental book is not believable to me.
Science is truth.

Isn't almost everything? I mean, are you not being closed minded by dismissing our beliefs out of hand?

I don’t judge you for believing in what you want to believe, but throwing religion at people is not okay.

I'd say a lot of people mistake a belief for truth.

Really? And science has all the answers? Did science have the answers when scientists thought the earth was flat? I mean it's not like almost every area of science has not been proven wrong in one area or other.
Medicine
evolution
creation of the universe
you can on and on about how science has been wrong or changed it's course on all of these subjects. We scientists in all these fields today that disagree on how different aspects occur.
Science taught us about the evolutionary chain. The Nebraska Man was taught to be one of the missing links and yet they found the entire skeletal system to have been put together starting the with tooth of an extinct pig.
I am not going to get into big arguments, but if you think science has been right about everything, then you have a lot to learn. That is why science is fluid and changes. Because as we gain knowledge... what we thought we knew to be truth becomes laughable. 100 years ago atoms were a theory. You couldn't see them. you couldn't prove them.
We look at how surgery was performed 200 years ago and we laugh at the archaic butchery of it. 200 years from today they will be laughing at how we perform surgery and the archaic butchery of it.
